Berkeley Prep QB Brad Mayes talks Florida and South Florida camps

For most high schoolers their freshman year is a bit draining. The summer is a time to relax with friends while rejuvenating and getting ready for your sophomore year.

Not so for Berkeley Prep quarterback Brad Mayes who is working out with the football, baseball and basketball teams on top of taking a class this summer to get ahead of his peers. He most recently camped at South Florida and the University of Florida, a three day camp.

Mayes enjoyed his time in Gainesville where he spoke with Coaches Derek Lewis, Brent Pease and Brian White; who said he would be down to see Mayes this fall.

“Florida camp was fun and a lot of work,” Mayes said. The 6-foot tall freshman impressed coaches who assumed he was a rising junior rather than a rising sophomore. “Coach Pease said he thought I would be really good and that he wanted to stay in contact with me.”

The most memorable part of the camp, Mayes said, was the Florida Grind. “It took more effort than anything I’ve ever had to do. It was a real college conditioning workout everyday for three days,” he explained. “It worked me … seriously.”

Mayes said he performed well throughout drills and impressed West Virginia Wesleyan (D II) Offensive Coordinator Matt Barnes who assisted in a number of passing drills at the Florida camp. Barns led the Bobcats to break 15 school records in his first season at West Virginia Wesleyan. Quarterback Adam Neugebauer led the nation in multiple passing categories throwing for 4,111 yards and 40 touchdowns, both schools records.

“He just kept stressing those numbers to me all camp,” Mayes said with a laugh. “It was really cool.”

Mayes also participated at Bulls’ camp yesterday. He was late due to his summer religion course, but since he attended the Big County Preps Full Prospect Forum he says that he didn’t miss much.

“I got in there late for the recruiting talk, but it was the same thing we talked about at the BCP Forum,” Mayes said. “We went over all the test scores and talked about some of the realities of recruiting.”

Following the recruiting talk the players hit the field where Mayes was paired with area quarterbacks Wharton’s Chase Litton, Gaither’s Alex McGough and Freedom’s Taylor King.

“We basically just did a lot of mechanical drills to warm up and then threw 1 on 1s for about 20 minutes,” Mayes said. He spoke with Coach Todd Fitch and Peter Vaas who he has developed a relationship after attending practice this spring.

The Berkeley Prep three-sport athlete plans to attend Miami camp on June 23rd and FSU camp sometime in July.
