HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY RECRUITING RECRUITING FEATURES

Winter working on his own name

Cam Winter, Plant 2014 WR

Cam Winter, Plant 6-1/185 WR is working to build his own legacy. A solid contributor the past couple seasons, he is anticipating a big senior year, “This season I will try my best to work with the team and be a leader,” say Winter.

If the last name “Winter” rings a bell, it should. Derek Winter, former Plant WR holds the county record for most catches in a season (90) and boasts career statistics of 192 overall receptions for 3,717 yards. Winter caught 192 passes during his four year career with Tampa-Plant for over 4,000 yards scoring 44 touchdowns. He caught 75 passes for 1,668 yards and 18 touchdowns during his senior season (2007).

Cam Winter knows the comparisons, but wants to walk his own path and let his play do the talking. “Having the ‘Winter’ name follows expectations. This senior season will truly be a chance for me to make my mark. With an upcoming schedule full of games set up for some great competition, this will allow me to make my mark, opening eyes, doing what I can to standout against other skilled teams and players. Making a mark for myself personally, I’m not worried about.  It will come by doing what I can to benefit the team and doing what I can to help the team win. Winning will make a name for itself.”

Plant will enter this weekend’s BHSN/BCP 9 Route 7 on 7 Tournament two years removed from winning the title in 2011. To Winter and the Panthers, the work and experience from such tournaments does more than just improve their football skills. “These 7 on 7 tournaments and events during the off season, I feel really do build the foundation of the team for the upcoming season. Learning how to compete and win with your team through 7 on 7 builds the unity and trust with one another. Also, it creates the bonds between players where you lay down the structure to be a State Champion kind of team,” – Cam Winter

Winter is a dependable and consistent player, “I take pride in being that ‘Go To guy’ on third downs where your team depends on you to make that grab.” He has shown the ability to make big catches in big moments. He has been a role player looking to transition into “That Guy” for his team. With the many memorable moments he has had as a Panther, one stands out over the rest. “I’d say my number one would be when we beat Armwood last year at home. For sure one to remember. An overtime game, where the defense played great and offense played physical throughout all 4 quarters. We prepared so much that week watching film and practiced against their defensive schemes. We all knew that we had to win that game. On offense we clicked and got done what we needed to get done. Definitely a well deserved win and one that tops the list.”

IN HIS OWN WORDS
“For college recruiting, it’s still really early in the game for me. Had a solid amount of schools showing good interest this spring. Really excited for this upcoming season. Just have to keep working hard and see how it all lays out for college.”
