University hangs one on Cocoa

University vs Cocoa

In a game which pitted 2 of the top teams in class 3A and 4A respectively the 4A University Suns came out victorious in a blowout fashion 49-3 against the perennial state champs Cocoa Tigers. This was not just any win this was a statement win for University who lost to Greg Bryant and the American Heritage Stallions last year in the playoffs as the Stallions lost to Cocoa this year.

From the onset University appeared to have the upper edge with a swarming defense and skill players all over the field. One in particular is sensational sophomore Jordan Scarlett who stands 6’0 205lbs with much room to grow. Scarlett sliced and diced the often thought tenacious Cocoa Tiger D all night on his way to a 200 yard performance and 3 TD’s. Scarlett was not the only star for the Suns as Sr WR Jordan Cunningham and QB Mike White lit u the Cocoa Secondary combining for 2 impressive TD passes.

Cocoa truly had no answer for University all night and they made very uncharacteristic plays such as losing the ball on fumbles 7 times in the game. That is not something normally seen by a Wilkerson coached team but if anything could go wrong for the Tigers tonight it did. Star RB Taurean Folston was limited to 9 yards on 16 carries.

To close this off University tonight looked like a team that can compete with anybody in the state regardless of classification and likely could beat most. They have a tough road ahead which includes a potential matchup with American Heritage in the playoffs who just knocked off Armwood. Meanwhile Cocoa is still a team that will win a lot of football games but they will have to use this game as a learning lesson put it behind them and move on.
