Standout Jesuit quarterback Tommy Eveld’s recruiting is starting to heat up. He was offered by Fairmont State, a Division II school in West Virginia, yesterday.

Eveld was about to walk out of his house to head to Jesuit’s 2011-2012 sports banquet, where he was named Co-offensive MVP, when he got a phone call from Falcons’ defensive coordinator Shahram Shafii who offered him the scholarship over the phone.

Tommy had never had contact with Fairmont prior to yesterday.

“He said that they saw my tape on SunshinePreps.com and liked it,” Eveld explained.

The coaches didn’t just like what they saw on film and decide to blindly throw an offer at a 6-foot 5-inch quarterback. It wasn’t just about his 65-percent completion rate; it wasn’t just about his 2326 passing yards and 20 touchdowns; it wasn’t just about his accolades which range from local media to national recognition.

“I felt they actually got to know me; they did their homework on me,” Eveld said. “They actually talked to me about football and how I would fit into the offense.”

Tommy liked it. “I felt like they actually wanted me to play quarterback for them.”

Eveld has also been offered by John Carroll University, a Division III school in University Heights Oh., and Marietta College, a Division III school in Marietta, Oh.

He finished 10-1 as a starter and took Jesuit into the regional playoffs final.

Eveld wants what ultimately every competitive athlete wants: to play at the highest possible level. For him, that means Division I football. The University of South Florida has offered him a preferred walk-on and Eveld will visit Bulls Country this weekend. USF still has a QB scholarship available. USF is home to his older brother Bobby whom first joined the Bulls as a walk-on before earning a scholarship in his second semester. If the pieces align Tommy could walk out of USF with an offer, but he says he isn’t expecting that.

Older brother Bobby will host Tommy this weekend on his official visit. Tommy says he doesn’t have any expectations going into the visit. He just wants to talk with the coaches and show them his football IQ this weekend. A football IQ that Blue-Grey Combine Director and quarterback coach JJ Koski says reminds him of Tom Brady. Koski explained that Eveld reminds him of Brady in the sense that he has a keen eye for picking up tendencies in a defense and even points things out to coaches before the coaches themselves see them.

Eveld his hopeful he picks up a Division I offer, but says he won’t rush things and is not going to commit anywhere until he is sure.

Marietta College and John Carroll University compete against each other in the Division III Ohio Athletic Conference. Marietta finished 3-7 while John Carroll turned in a 5-5 record. Fairmont fished 7-4 while competing in the Division II West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
