HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY RECRUITING

There is a thin line…between good and GREAT

S. OgletreeThe Persuaders gave us the classic hit “A Thin Line Between Love and Hate” and that would be completely appropriate for this little teachable moment that occurred at E7 yesterday as well. While working on pass coverage in the red zone versus the running backs, Plant City’s Steven Ogletree made what appeared to be a textbook pass break-up following a perfect drop to the spot, then read-and-react to beat the ball to its final destination; the running back.

That play drew the attention of Coach Keith Newman who then pounced at the chance to let him know this is where games can be lost even if they “play has been made.” Newman went on to explain that mere inches and a little situational awareness turns that into six points. Ogletree may only be a 2017 prospect, but he was second on Plant City’s Defense last season with 118 tackles, 3 pass deflections and 3 caused fumbles.

The Raiders were 4-6-1 not including their tie versus Steinbrenner they lost all six of their games by a touchdown or less including their 9-7 playoff defeat to Sickles. Newman’s message was one of praise, but it was also a stark reminder that “the money play” should finish with the ball in his hands and his defense turned into offense. All in the name of this quest for greatness. – Doug Pugh
