The Recruiting Pie: Factors that are considered by college coaches

Recruiting Pie

The diagram above represents key factors when starting the recruiting process. The “Pie” is not the exact same for each player. Some sections may vary. But, this will get you going. What catches the eye of a college recruiter, keep his attention and hopefully help prospects land a scholarship offer.

1. PROPERLY CONSTRUCTED HILITE FLIM AND ACADEMICS
College coaches are pressed for time. Their day consist of many different segment to increase the number of wins, develop young men and recruit high school athletes. A properly constructed hilite film is crucial to attracting the attention of college coaches. Consider this as your resume’. Before a college coach knows anything about you, he will review your resume’. Depending how it looks will prompt the college coach to follow up on the potential prospect.

GPA and Standardized Test Score prevent, limit or promote a potential college prospect. Without meeting NCAA or NAIA eligibility standards, a college coach will be reluctant to recruit potential prospects. Above average GPA and Test score opens many more college options. Lower the GPA and test score, options begin to diminish.

2. GAME FILM
Picture a box of matches and a fireplace packed with logs, ready to be burned. The match is your hilite film. It says, “This will get the fire started!” Your game film is the logs in the fireplace. They keep the fire going. College coaches will watch as much game film on potential prospects to get a good gauge on athletes; Hustle, selfish, complainers, selfless, block away from the play, step up in pass pro, relationship with teammates, block away from the play, etc.

3. CHARACTER
The mental and moral qualities distinctive to an individual. Universities want to invest in kids who will be great representatives of their institutions.

4. PROMOTION
The fastest, most agile, well-designed car in the world could be for sale; But if it sits in the manufacturing warehouse and customers are not aware of it, no one will have the opportunity to purchase it. Consumers will not be unaware that the vehicle exists. This day in age, players have to “GET OUT!”

Now, there are ways of creating a different path to scholarships. Selective showcases test the kids with numbers, but also understand the selective areas, the talent, and have a genuine interest in their coverage area athletes. They can put the kids in a setting where their skills are showcased against each other and identify talent this way.

Combines, Showcases and Official track times are used as cross references when recruiting prospects. The are usual resources for college coaches that have interest in certain players or spark plugs for players with no attentions. With the media promotions of companies like BCP and Sunshine Preps, word and information can spread and then the steps listed above will play out.

5. MEASURABLES
Height and length are very important in the recruiting process. Weight plays a part, but not as much as height, length and skill set. The prospects that fit the prototypical size of an athlete at specific position will get the looks first from college coaches. The smaller a player is, the more elusive, faster, quicker and/or aggressive a player needs to be to catch the eye of college coaches.

The traditional approach still works with “No Brainer” freak athletes. Have good film, be academically qualified and the college coaches will find out about you. Once one, two or three college coaches receive film, the prospect will be on the map. But for the majority of the potential prospects, a new approach is needed that includes the right showcase/combines that lead to promotion. We (BCP) have a heavy focus on local (coverage area) talent and have an understanding ahead of time what and who is who and want others to jump out at us.
