It’s another week of debatable questions coming your way as we rapidly approach tomorrow’s action. This week, we pose the questions that ALL of the 0-2 teams we’ve made a fuss over could rebound, while ALL of the teams we’ve celebrated starting 2-0 could find themselves with a loss. We also pose the topic that it’s time to send those dark clouds surrounding the QB situations at some schools away, since we may be seeing the light already. We also wonder whether or not last week’s EPIC game versus Manatee and Palmetto will have any lasting effects. Enjoy!
0-2 teams that could ALL win this week…
We’ve made quite a fuss over some the teams that have started their seasons at 0-2. Namely–Lake Gibson, Hillsborough, Indian Rocks Christian, Victory Christian, Jefferson and Frostproof. We’ve been pretty hard on these teams and deservedly so in some cases, but here comes the positive. Hope is not lost. Last time we checked, district play doesn’t begin for another week and there’s still time to fix some things. Week three presents the perfect opportunity for these teams to get off the snide. Lake Gibson hosts Fort Lauderdale-Dillard, Hillsborough hosts Gaither, IRC hosts Calvary, Victory is at Northside, Jefferson is at Sickles and Frostproof hosts Tenoroc. The debate is not about how many of the six can get into the win column–it’s that all six will successfully do it this week specifically. The floor is yours…
2-0 teams that could ALL lose this week…
What about the teams that have started the season like gangbusters? We’ve made some noise that’s been warranted for these teams after the first two weeks. Specifically–Riverview, Wharton, Lake Region, Ridgewood and Lakewood. Now for the litmus test. The Sharks head to East Bay this week, Wharton hosts TBT, Lake Region is on the road at Bartow while Ridgewood hosts Mitchell–the Spartans will travel to Bolles this Friday. As euphoric as things may seem for these teams–and as positive as we’ve been about their starts–ALL FIVE could see blemishes in their loss columns this week at one time. Just like the topic from the 0-2 teams, it’s not about how many of these teams will make it happen–there’s cases to be made for some of them winning their games. The debate is whether or not NONE of them will get to the 3-0 mark by midnight tomorrow. The floor is yours…
Could we be seeing the next generation of QB’s emerging?
We’ve lost some pretty good QB’s this season to injury and that’s changed the dynamic slightly in the signal-calling landscape. We’ve got some pretty good underclassmen that are beginning to make their push already to become well-known names by the end of the season–much less this time next year. Guys like Tampa Catholic’s Austin Sessums, Winter Haven’s William Tate, Jesuit’s Daniel Boon, and Steinbrenner’s Colin Wray appear to be lighting up the darkness that fell upon the area when guys like Culpepper and Weldon went down. The first three are all juniors, while Wray is just a sophomore this season. Sessums, Boon and Wray are all completing over 70-percent of their passes and Wray is at 63-percent. These four have combined for 1,510 yards and 19 touchdowns through the first two weeks and most importantly–their teams are a combined 8-0. No pressure here fellas. The debate is this–are we seeing the future, now–or do we need to pump the brakes? Do your homework–and film work. And don’t forget Weldon will be back to join them along with two more names–Manatee’s AJ Colagiovanni and Strawberry Crest’ Tate Whatley. The floor is yours…
Somebody’s gonna feel it…the aftermath of Manatee-Palmetto that is…
An instant classic last week could produce an instant nightmare this week if either squad is feeling the aftermath of a game that took as much mentally–as it did physically. The past six seasons they’ve played, Manatee is 6-0 in the weeks following their game with the Tigers while Palmetto has gone 4-2. When the game was played late in the season as it was the last four season before this one, the ‘Canes have fared relatively easy dispatching St. Petersburg and Sarasota in impressive fashion. Palmetto defeated Lakewood Ranch the last two seasons and split with Southeast–this week’s opponent for Palmetto in 2011 and 2012. The years this game was played EARLY in the season like it was this season, Manatee went 2-0, but were involved with slugfests with Southeast in 2009-2010 the following week. Palmetto split their games with Hardee those same years. The point (and debate) is this. Last week’s game may not be the end-all, be-all for either team–but their histories suggest they could be on upset-alert. The floor is yours for debate.
