Everybody want’s to know what’s going on with Leon McQuay III (Armwood, 2013 S). Even his father. Leon McQuay III is, I guess you can say shy. He doesn’t give too much during an interview. He could easily go without cameras in his face and sometimes, he can block out football all together.

His father, Leon McQuay Jr. took a minute to tell us somethings we probably would not have been able to pull out of his son. He has been criticized for being too involved in his son’s recruiting process. A 17 year old high school 5 star prospect with every college coach in America and media outlet wanting him to commit to their school or provide them with some information. Would you be “TOO involved” if your son was dealing with this?

No matter your opinion on the question posted above, Leon McQuay Jr, takes us and gives BCP a taste of what could be the hold up for a Leon McQuay III commitment.

BCP: WHAT IS THE SITUATION? WHAT’S GOING ON?
Leon McQuay (Father): Nebraska and Oregon are the only written offers that I know of. The other schools, FSU, USC and Vandy [Vanderbilt] are doing their thing as far as receiving commitments from kids. Leon is just hanging out. I have talked with him and he says when he gets together all the information from all the schools, he will make a decision then.

BCP: WHAT DOORS HAVE CLOSED ON HIM THAT HE AND THE FAMILY WERE HIGHLY INTERESTED IN?
Leon McQuay (Father): From my understanding, just the Michigan thing, the door hasn’t closed. At that particular time, they were trying to get him to commit before they had another kid commit. Michigan…he really liked Michigan. With him getting his 5th star (Elite prospect evaluation), I don’t think any doors are closed for him. I think it made his situation a little easier for what it is he is trying to do. I give him the information that I get. He processes it and does with it when he feels. I am basically letting him make an informed decision. My job is just to get the information that I can and pass it on to him. I’m waiting like everybody else it [laughter].

BCP: HOW DO YOU AS A FATHER WALK THAT FINE LINE?
Leon McQuay (Father): It’s relatively easy WITH HIM! With his grades being what they are and him playing this summer on the summer circuit. It’s a process that is not hard. It’s the decision process that’s holding up everything. That’s hard! This is a situation that you want your kid to be in. Academically and athletically. It’s not a task for me as a parent. I’m not making decisions for him. I made that mistake with my oldest son. You live, you learn and you make adjustments. With Leon (III), he is his own captain! He likes USC and really likes Michigan and he really likes Vandy. Oregon, that’s an official [visit] he was planning on working out and and the official visit with Notre Dame, that’s gonna happen. FSU, we are going there on September 22nd and he has been talking with Stoops a lot (Florida State Defensive Coordinator). It’s going to be interesting.

BCP: KEY FACTORS OUTSIDE OF MUSIC
Leon McQuay (Father): Playing early and playing a lot. He wants to go somewhere, where he is needed. That’s something he has said. He wants to probably graduate in three years and move on. The way the recruiting process has changed so much and how these schools are leveraging themselves against these kids, it’s getting to a point to where, it’s no wonder why these kids are decommitting and coming back home and reevaluating their situation. Where as before, It was always the kids went through the decision process and picked where they wanted to go. I think it needs to get back to that. The more time that they have, the better decision they can make.

BCP: LEON DOESN’T WANT TO BE ONE OF THOSE KIDS WHO HAS TO REEVALUATION THE SITUATION?
Leon McQuay (Father): Exactly! That’s the thing also. When you give your word…I have tried to teach my kids. When you give your word, It’s got to be that. As a man, that is something you are going to have to do the rest of your life. That is something that he has probably taken heed to and I can’t push him. I don’t want anyone pushing him if that is the idea that he has. He has said, ‘When I know, I’ll know!’

We leave you with this treat.  Leon McQuay is a 5 star National prospect.  Known for his acrobatic interceptions and bone crushing hits. In the video below, you will see this 5 star prospect busting his tail on special teams. blocking punts, screaming down the field on kick coverage and making unselfish plays. SHY? The kid just does what is asked of him.
