Dunedin Falcons
2011 4-6 HC Max Smith
2012 6-4 HC Max Smith
Head football coach Max Smith is upbeat, hard working and very demanding. His coaching style has taken the Falcons from a 2-8 2010 season under former head coach, Jack Benson to a 6-4 record in 2012. Under Smith, the Falcons season record has improved by two wins each year, which leads us to believe that the players have bought into the new era and are believing they can compete each game.
Dunedin was knee deep in an inter-squad scrimmage when I arrived on Friday. The offense looks to be a spread scheme relying on the decision making of QB Givanni Gonzalez who was held out of practice due to a minor foot injury. On the outside of Gonzalez are several receiving threats:
Devante Lang, 2014 6-4/178 lbs
Jacob Davis, 2014 6-2/177 lbs
Jayven Fitzpatrick, 2015 6-2/190 lbs
Adarius Sims, 2015 6-3/170 lbs – Was not present at practice
As you can see, all the WRs are very long. Making for a larger target for the QB. They are very athletic, have good down field speed and can “climb the ladder” to bring down the high thrown football. Jacob Davis made several plays on both sides of the ball when I was at practice. He seems to be the dark horse of the group, primed for a breakout season.
SHUTDOWN AND LOCKDOWN
SHUTDOWN – Brenton Allen is a big boy. At 6-2/216 lbs, he has a pretty frame and attracts the eye in a hurry. I really liked the way Allen runs and how he drops into pass coverage. Loose hips and good feet, Allen is a division 1 ILB. It will be hard for teams to run at him as he will shutdown the interior runs.
LOCKDOWN – Jordan Williams is a solid cover corner. Slightly undersized standing 5-9/170 lbs, Williams has lots of ability and is one of the better corners in Pinellas County. During the scrimmage, he caught a TD pass and intercepted one, returning it for a TD. Very confident players who be a sleeper in the 2015 recruiting class.
