“Side by Side” series continues today with the quarterbacks. Pete Dinovo, East Lake 2013 QB and Newsome 2013 QB, Will Worth, are side by side today. However, is this even a fair comparison? Let’s examine the players.
QB Pete Dinovo is a 2011 second team All BCP team QB selection. He is currently ranked as the #1 pro style quarterback in Tampa Bay and #11 player overall. Dinovo is a three-year starter for the Eagle, posting notable numbers in 2011. The 6-2 QB holds a verbal offer from Houston and high interest from several other college football programs.
Will Worth is a 2011 first team utility ALL BCP team selection. Worth is the 23rd ranked player in Tampa Bay and #1 ranked Dual-Threat QB in our coverage area. Worth would be described as a gutsy player, Tim Tebow like and very scrappy. He has no offers, but has some interest bubbling.
Both Dinovo and Worth competed at two of the highest classifications in the state of Florida. East Lake and Dinovo lost to Plant in the quarterfinals of the 2011 playoffs. Newsome missed the playoffs by one game, finishing the season at 6-4, while East Lake finished at 9-4. The QBs are winners, but styles are completely different.
The tables turn in Worth’s favor when the rushing attack is evaluated. Worth rushed for 1020 yards last season, five times as many yards as Dinovo and 6 more rushing TDs. Rushing for a score every twelve attempts.Dinovo completed slightly less than three times as many passes as Worth last season and twice as many touchdown passes. By the numbers, he threw a TD pass every thirteen attempts.
Which way do you go? Dinovo has the passing yards and an advantage in the completion percentage. 68% (Pete Dinovo) vs. 50% (Will Worth), but for a QB with over 1K rushing yards, Will Worth 50% completion percentage on 132 attempts is pretty good. The stats provide evidence that Worth is a balanced, text book description of a dual-threat QB.
Nevertheless, Pete Dinovo is a gunslinger. He averaged 187 passing yards per game and is a legitimate college QB prospect. Dinovo maneuvers in a pro style offense, while Worth is the operator of a misdirection-designed offense. Both QBs are highly effective in their own right. But, which 2013 signal caller would be your man?
