HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY SPRING CAPSULES THE BOX

Robinson on the board, but weather won out in the end

This past week, Hillsborough County coaches, including Robinson head coach Mike DePue, lamented over the fact that Hillsborough County public schools were only permitted to play one half of football in their spring jamborees. One wonders how they will feel about five minutes? Or no game at all? Lightning delayed the start of the Jefferson/Robinson game for over an hour Thursday night. Once the game started, Jefferson took the opening kickoff and promptly went three and out. A short punt gave the Knights possession of the ball just outside of Dragon territory. A short gain on second down negated a short loss on first down. And, after an illegal procedure call, Knight quarterback (#12 Vidal Woodruff) hit running back Martin Ruiz with a screen pass that picked up about 20 yards. An offside penalty spotted Robinson 5 additional yards and with about seven minutes remaining in the opening quarter, Ruiz scampered 25 yards off of right tackle, untouched, into the end zone for a Knight TD. Before the extra point could be attempted, a bolt of lightning flashed across the sky and play was halted. School officials waited another 45 minutes before calling the game. Plant players barely got off the bus and their game against the home team Leto Falcons also was cancelled. According to initial reports from school administrators, the game will not be rescheduled.
