RECRUITING THE BOX

Recruiting Mailbag: My son is D1 or D2 material

MP36MOM: I would like to know what does it REALLY take to be a “recruitable” athlete other than good grades?

BCP: Great, honest question. First and foremost it is talent and skill set. Let’s not kid ourselves. If prospects were not great or good athletes, they would not be getting recruited by football programs. Depending on the level of football, measurables such as height and weight are really big factors. Once measurables are taken into consideration for the position being recruited, talent, speed and athleticism become the next big factors.

Aside from academics which you already mentioned in your question, character weighs a lot. College football programs want to avoid bringing in knuckle heads. They do not want to invest in a kid who could embarrass them publicly and bring unwanted attention to the football program & University as a whole.

All that to say this, college football programs would like to have the total package, which is a great player, great person and great academic student.

Jenny: If my son plays both JV and Varsity, class of 2016, who would I talk to about getting a recruiting video of him? He is definitely D1 or D2 material. I started the recruiting process kinda late on my other son, and you guys have mentioned he is a BIG Sleeper. I don’t want the same thing to happen with him. Where do I start?

BCP: Love this question. Many parents have the same question and they just don’t know which direction or where to turn. Number one recommendation is do not use junior varsity film. Only use his varsity snaps to create your highlight. It is not necessarily the number of plays on the highlight film but the quality of the plays on the highlight film. Remember a highlight film is just that, highlights! It is not every run that he made or every tackle he made or every time he threw a ball. It needs to be plays that stand out and attract the attention of college coaches. Now to answer your initial questions you should email sunshine Preps (info@sunshinepreps.net).
