Leaping Leopards: Hernando’s Big Cats in the trenches

Hernando High School Class of 2016 T/G, Devin Nichols
Hernando High School Class of 2016 T/G, Devin Nichols

Keeping with the this week’s prospect focus theme that takes a look at some of the guys slightly beyond our area, we take a closer look at the two young men in the trenches for the Leopards. The first prospect is T/G Devin Nichols. This 6-foot-2, 335-pound member of the Class of 2016 is a mauler that can play either at tackle or guard, on the right or left side thus making him an extremely versatile and important piece for his Leopards squad. His skill set and frame make him an intriguing addition to someone’s roster at the collegiate level, for sure.

The common characteristics that allow Nichols to be so effective at either spot on the line are the ability to latch on and finish his blocks down field, plus he consistently stays low and drives his man using excellent core strength as well. Watching Nichols on film you have to pay close attention. He switches spots so quickly and seamlessly along the line you can appreciate how athletic this giant is.

The second prospect for Hernando that could make a huge impact this season is DL Tyson Libengood. This 6-foot-1, 225-pounder his very active and shows instincts that could make him valuable at several positions at the next level. Libengood finished this 2014 season with 57 tackles, but case in point with the “very active” description as he was credited with two sacks, an interception and a caused fumble.
