Every high school football fan in the Tampa Bay area has undoubtedly heard the name Leon McQuay. The senior safety for Armwood High School is unquestionably the team’s defensive leader and ranked by every recruiting service as one of the top players in the nation; however, he is not the only standout in the Hawks defensive backfield.

Junior safety Kyle Gibson has had a standout year as well recording 53 tackles and two interceptions. Big County Prep’s was fortunate to be able to catch up with Gibson this week and interview him about the Hawks season and their big game this weekend with Gainesville High.

Question: What has been Armwood’s team goal this season?

Answer: From the start of summer practices are main goal has been to return to state and prove that we are one of the best teams in the country.

Q: What was the team attitude after a three loss regular season?

A: We were definitely a little discouraged. We are not use to losing at Armwood especially in the regular season but we know that once the playoffs started the regular season no longer mattered. People only remember how you perform in the playoffs and continued success here will prove a lot of doubters wrong.

Q: What have you learned since transferring from Middleton to Armwood?

A: I can honestly say that I have learned everything since the move. I am a more complete player. I now not only understand the safety position but how a defense flows and should operate.

Q: What has been the team’s biggest challenge so far this year?

A: For some reason it has been really difficult to play up to our potential this year. As a team we know how good we can be but we haven’t played to that level every game consistently.

Q: What college football team have you been most impressed with this year?

A: Notre Dame has had a nice season. They have proved a lot of people wrong. I hope that Armwood can keep proving nonbelievers wrong in the playoffs just like Notre Dame has.

Q: Are you currently being recruited by anyone?

A: Teams are starting to show a lot of interest which is exciting.

Q: How much of an impact has Leon McQuay’s recruitment had on you? What did you learn from him as a player and a recruit?

A: Leon has had a lot of impact on my recruitment. Coaches watching his tape and coming to see him at practice are starting to notice me as well. He is an incredible player and has taught me how to play the safety position. I know I will have some huge shoes to fill next year.

Q: What unofficial visits are you attempting to make after the season and what schools have you already visited?

A: So far this year I have visited USF, UCF and UF and this summer I plan on taking visits to Vandy, FSU, and Notre Dame.
