Jaylen Pickett: One of the best football plays of the spring

When evaluating prospects, I look for skill set for the position. Includes, speed, physicality, agility and football IQ to name a few. Lots of times I see big time plays made by big time players. You see LBs blow up fullbacks and great athletes take a five yard hitch, make 2 defenders miss and take it 70 yards to the house. Plays like that are easy to highlight.

Then, you see good high school football players make really good FOOTBALL plays. Plays that only come once a season and get coached every day. Jaylen Pckett makes one of those types of plays in the film below. If he were James Wilder or Vernon Hargreaves and made this play I will describe to you shortly, it would get 25,000 YouTube views. Regardless, it is one of the best football plays I have seen of all the spring Hilites I has evaluated thus far.

On the second play of the clip, Pickett comes out the secondary from at least 12 yards deep, blows up the lead blocker on the perimeter run, keeping his outside shoulder free and makes the tackle on contact. That type of play for a high school coach will be used as training tape for years to come. You coach for Pickett to take on the lead block, keep his outside shoulder free, not to let the ball bounce outside of him and to turn the play back inside to his defensive help. Pickett gave a bonus. Blew the whole play up and made the tackle for a loss. One heck of a football play.
