HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY THE BOX

Heading East – Durant and Newsome

The two have some history – Although as of late Newsome has pretty much owned the series. Since 2005 Newsome is 6-1 over Durant, with a loss in 2011.

2005 Newsome 50-10
2006 Newsome 16-13
2007 Newsome 14-9
2008 Newsome 14-6
2009 Newsome 35-31
2010 Newsome 38-28
2011 Durant 33-14

If the schedule remains unchanged for 2012 Durant will host Newsome on October 19; with Newsome coming off a bye. We will look at a few position by position matchups to see who has the edge in 2012.

Will Worth, Newsome, 2013 QB at the BCP 2011 E7 Training Camp
Will Worth, Newsome, 2013 QB at the BCP 2011 E7 Training Camp

Will Worth is the signal caller for Newsome. The unanimous No. 1 dual-threat QB is a tank. He threw for 925 yards and rushed for an additional 1,020. Durant’s head-man is coming in with big shoes to fill. Zach Stevenson replaces Nick Fabrizo who had a great 2011 season of his own passing for 733 yards and rushing for 1,085.

It’s safe to say Newsome holds the edge with an unproven quarterback at Durant.

Durant definitely has the edge at runningback. Jamarlon Hamilton rushed for 1,117 yards as junior and will carry the load once again. Newsome’s runningback is basically its quarterback. The Wolves top-returning ball carrier (not named Will Worth) is Clint Carnell who rushed for 572 yards in 2011. While Carnell is a viable back, it has yet to be seen if he can carry a full season load.

The battle between Newsome and Durant will surely continue to be fun to follow. Will Durant make it two in a row, or will Newsome get back to its winning ways?
