Gibbs Gary Simon and Albert McCoy make college choices

Gary Simon, as expected, signed with Oklahoma during Gibbs’ National Signing Day Ceremony. Simon held over 20 offers and had narrowed his choice down to Arkansas, Iowa State and Oklahoma.

The Gibbs defensive back says that he really liked both the football and the academic and feels that it is a school where he can succeed athletically and academically for four full years.

Simon says that he wasn’t 100% committed to his decision until late last night.

“So many people offered me so I just had to make the best decision for me,” he said.

Another reason Simon says that OU caught his eye is that it was one of five or six schools to say he could play both football and basketball.

“It was a big key-I’ve wanted to do that for my whole life,” Simon explained.

Simon joins Armwood safety Eric Striker as a Sooner commit. He says that Striker has been in contact with him and he’s excited for the two to play together.

“We’re going to be roommates when we get there and I know him really well so it’s going be great with us together,” Simon said.

Defensive end Albert McCoy also signed his LOI today during the 10 a.m. ceremony. McCoy sat down at the Gibbs’ signing table sporting a Buffalo jersey and hat.

Academics were a key reason for McCoy choosing Buffalo, who he says offered him about a week ago. He also had offers from Missouri, Kansas and FAU.

“I chose Buffalo because it had my major,” McCoy who will be a product design and advertising design major. “It’s more about the major for me, but it has a great facilities, great coaches and great players too.”

Gibbs head coach Antonio Knox had a clear message for all the Gibbs student body that was in attendance.

“The movement has begun,” he said as he highlighted the skills of both Simon and McCoy. “This is why I left the college ranks. This is only the beginning for Gibbs – Talent is going to get into college.”
