PASCO COUNTY

Game of the Week: Wiregrass Ranch at Sunlake

Don’t tell me there’s another hurricane coming. Just don’t do it. I’m already still on the edge from last time. Cancellations, as you already know, came practically every 30 seconds last week, but this week, we should have a full slate of football. Unless, of course, another freak tropical system barrels through the Carribean and into Florida in the next day. I’m currently knocking on wood.

Sunlake vs. Wiregrass Ranch is going to be a good on on Friday.
Sunlake vs. Wiregrass Ranch is going to be a good on on Friday.

But, now to the task at hand. We’ve got our full slate of games this week, and one of the main ones that we have our eyes on is a Pasco County class between Wiregrass Ranch and Sunlake. This is Sunlake’s first time being at home this season, after taking trips to Gulf and Zephyrhills in the past two weeks. Wiregrass Ranch is rested after their rivalry game against Wesley Chapel was moved to Week Eleven.

Here’s what we got though: two Pasco teams that want to get ahead. It’s a non-district game, but this may finally prove that Wiregrass Ranch will be able to compete in their Hillsborough County district. A common opponent between the two is Zephyrhills. The Bulldogs were dismantled by Wiregrass Ranch in Week One, 43-8, but then came back at home to take on Sunlake, where they didn’t disappoint. The Bulldogs beat the Seahawks, 27-15, in a game that mostly everyone had Sunlake coming out on top.

We’ve also got quite a few BCP campers in this game, which makes it more interesting, because these guys have been going against each other since January. For Sunlake, they’ve got a trio of guys in Cris Galdos, Ryan Clark, and Tyler Peretti that doesn’t disappoint. However, it’s going to take QB Justin Hall to be a lot more selective in his passing. He was very quick to throw the ball last week and he almost got himself into some trouble at times. Galdos had 170 receiving yards against Zephyrhills, and he’s already got over 260 on the year. Justin Metzger and Kevis Warren combine in the backfield to create a nice running game on non-passing down. It’s a viable option, but this is a passing team at heart.

For Wiregrass Ranch, we’ve got a couple of guys that can stop that pass offense, and it starts on the outside with Shamaur McDowell and Jordan Miner. The two are a dynamic duo in the secondary, one that Justin Hall will have to pay attention for. Remember, the Bulls defense limited Z-Hills to eight points. The Sunlake defense limited Z-Hills to 27 (not much of a limit, eh?). For the Ranch, Daniel Biglow will be the greatest offensive weapon for QB Chris Faddoul to pass to. But where this offense really thrives is on the ground. Da Da McGee had 210 rushing yards against Zephyrhills two weeks ago, and Chase Oliver had 88 himself.

It’s going to be a close game, no matter which side you’re going for. We’ve got two different offenses, two different types of players, but that’s what makes this game unique. You can go out and watch live at Sunlake High in Land O’Lakes starting at 7:30 on Friday evening, and we’ll have all the updates you need on our Twitter page.
