PINELLAS COUNTY

East Lake’s opponent, Treasure Coast

District Champions, East Lake Eagles will host Treasure Coast from Port St. Lucie this Friday.  East Lake will enter the contest at 9-1. Treasure Coast is listed at 5-3 (Maxpreps) respectively.

WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT EAST LAKE
Eagles are traditionally a very balanced team. They like the the power run game which opens up their playaction. This year, their offensive talent has allowed them to spread the ball around more and gear the offense towards gun slinger Pete Dinovo. The Eagles have racked up 2200 passing yards vs. 1300 rush yards.

The defense has been solid. The team has allowed just over 21 points per game and 216 points on the year. The defense has forced 13 turnovers and 43 defended passes.

TREASURE COAST OBSERVATIONS

OFFENSE
A team full of skilled players. The offense attempts to do a number of diffenet things, but is must succesful when using their power game. The game I watched, three different players took snaps but the offense moved the ball better with #1 and #2 behind center.

They like to align in the Pistol backfield set using either one or two TEs on opposite sides. The backs are very shifty and do not fall easy. They also had success when aligning the QB in the gun with an I-formation to either side. Again, the offense is most successful when running the ball and running vertically, not horizontally.

They do not pass protect very well. Several times pressure came straight up the middle where the defense beat the double team to get into the offensive backfield. Neither QB (#1, #2, #4) showed a high level of accuracy.

DEFENSE
Treasure Coast is a base 3-4 team that thrives on their ability to get some pressure with their front 3 and cover with their back 8. They did not show a tendency to bring pressure and rarely did they stunt.

The defensive line is pretty good and continued to chase the ball the whole game. They are upfield and play with eyes open to retract on ball carriers. Even though Treasure Coast usually drops 8 into coverage, receivers were open often.

KEYS
East Lake must tackle well on defense and not give up the big play. Treasure Coast has the guys that will take it the distance. Eagles must also play well on defensive special teams. Treasure Coast has a dangerous return game and blocks on kick off return extremely well. Treasure Coast looks to be susceptible to the power and lead by their defensive alignment, which are two of East Lake’s favorite run plays.

Treasure coast should not get fancy vs the Eagles. Run downhill and mix in playaction. Allow athletes to make plays in space. The horizontal screen game may work well vs. the Eagles as they tend to play looser in the secondary.
