DEFENSIVE BACKS: SPEED TURN IS THE SAFETY FEATURE

So this happened to Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive back Ryan Smith this past Sunday versus the Falcons (keep reading below after viewing video).

Double-move…hard route to stop. But the #Defensiveback would have been in better position and on his feet if he had used the #Speedturn.

Could it have been prevented? Maybe not. The receiver is still All Pro Julio Jones and the route is super crisp. Nonetheless, Smith could end in better shape if he would have allowed his momentum to carry him to the ball in a technique referred to as the “Speed-turn.”

By using the speed-turn, Smith would have played the post route, when Jones pressed to the corner Smith would have planted upfield, turning away from Jones but keeping his speed and balance ultimately placing him in a better position to limit the yardage gained after the completion.

See the video below of a few basic speed-turn drills. The first drill is the one to focus on when defending the post-corner as Julio Jones ran in the first video above. The speed-turn is the safety belt of defensive back techniques. It is not throw into to play very often. But the one time it is needed on sudden impact, boy does it come in handy to prevent injury, prevent a TD.
