David Jones, St. Petersburg, ATH

David Jones, who already holds an offer from Richmond, will be visited by Richmond coaches today at St. Petersburg High School. Although his senior season is over, recruiting is just heating up for the 2012 Big County Preps’ Player of the Year finalist.

“Theres been a lot of phone calls and a lot of coaches coming to see me, pulling me out of class to talk with me and my coach,” Jones explained. “I’m not really sure where I want to go; I’m hoping more offers come soon, but I’m not rushing anything.”

The Spiders were the first to offer Jones and have been with him the longest.

Listed as a quarterback Jones found himself playing a much larger role than even he expected this year. Instead of being exclusively a quarterback Jones has been a dynamic ball carrier, receiver, defensive back, kick and punt returner.

“I kinda knew I would be playing more than one position, but not as many as I did. I didn’t expect to play cornerback and definitely didn’t expect to play runningback,  punt returner or kick returner at all,” he said.

Jones 2011 Statistics: 75 carries, 875 yards rushing, 12.15 ypc, 87.5 ypg, 10 rushing TDs, 18 receptions, 337 , 1 receiving TD, 49 solo tackles, 81 total tackles, 3 INTs, 1 PD, 1 CF, 294 PR yards, 19.6 per return, 211 KOR yards, 21.1 yards per return:

Because of his versatility Jones said: “I was characterized as one of the best athletes at the school so I just did what I had to do on and off the field,” he explained. “I’m working hard on everything,  day in and day out. It really paid off because I’m getting a lot of phone calls and attention from all over the country.”

On being a BCP POY finalist

“It’s an honor. I didn’t see myself making it this far. I thought I would just be a quarterback in the Wing-T handing the ball off every down so it’s really an honor. I’m glad I got to play different positions for film.”
