POLK COUNTY RECRUITING RECRUITING FEATURES VIDEO FEATURES

Chris Nelson, Big Fish in a small pond

Victory Christian is a small pond, with a few big fish. A darn good receiver, a few good role players and Chris Nelson. The 6-2/285 lbs DT is more than a handful. He is a houseful. Big, mean, quick and agile, Nelson has schools like Wake Forest, Missouri, Virginia, Louisville, USF, Duke, FAU, Iowa, Kentucky, Middle Tennessee, Pittsburgh, Purdue, South Alabama, UCF wanting his services at their school.

Previously a Virginia verbal commit, Nelson decided to open his recruitment back up to ensure he left no stone unturned. He almost wasn’t such a high profile DT. Thoughts of middle LB swirled around for a while. But, Nelson settled in to his position, which he explains in the Q & A below.

Around what age did you start playing organized football?
CN: I started playing organized football when I was four.

What position did you want to play when you first started playing?
CN: I always wanted to play LB when I started playing.

How did you get on the defensive line? Did you resist playing there at first?
CN: I played LB up to the 11th grade. I got a little to big for LB, so I moved down to DL to work on my craft before going to college cause I new that’s what I would be playing.

When did you harness the position and really work to be good there?
CN: The more I work on my position, things just fall in place. Becomes second nature.

Why Victory Christian and not a bigger powerhouse program?
CN: The reason I went to Victory, cause I was zone for Haines City High but nobody was really making it out. So my friend Demeitre Brim was about to transfer from there and told me it would be best for me to just go with him and it would work out for the best. We think of it as being a big fish in a small pond.

When did recruiting take off for you?
CN: Recruiting really started when I was in 9th grade. I stared getting letters, but it was a small thing at that time. It really started getting crazy going into my 11th grade year and took off from there.

Nelson is currently our 36th best college football prospects. He has the tools to be dominant again in 2013. He made his decision to attend Victory Christian and Not Haines City. He made the decision to improve as a defensive tackle and not line backer. Now, he has to decide if it is time for Victory Christian to stamp Polk County.
