Berkeley Prep Freshman Quarterback Brad Mayes

Brad Mayes Berkeley Prep QB 2015 6’ 0” 171 lbs

Brad Mayes is a developing three-sport athlete in line to be the Berkeley Prep Buccaneers starting quarterback next year.

The freshman saw action in nine games throwing for 18 yards, rushing for 38 yards (1 touchdown) and also registered 12 tackles on defense. Additionally the 6-footer completed his first high school pass in the Buccaneers’ spring game which went for a 67-yard touchdown.

Mayes said the play was a post where he hit his receiver, Justin Vogel, 30-or so yards down the field between two defensive backs before Vogel took care of the rest.

The 6-foot tall freshman is a product of the John Kaleo Quarterback Academy. He has been with Kaleo since he was nine years old.

“I knew him before football,” Mayes said of Kaleo. “He is a family friend. I wouldn’t be the quarterback I am today without him. He’s taught me that having fun is important and makes training fun.”

“He has helped teach me things mentally and physically, especially with my mechanics. Mentally learning coverages and making the right decisions; I always know how to use feet because of him.”

As a freshman backup Mayes had the opportunity to learn from 2012 quarterback Destin Nichols as well as Pete Dinovo, one of the top-rated quarterbacks in the Bay Area, at the Kaleo QB Academy.

“They make me want to work harder,” Mayes said of Nichols’ and Dinovo’s influence on him. “They want me to reach their level and beyond that. They’ve taught me mental things and always tell me to keep my head up when I make mistakes.”

Mayes has the intangibles to be a highly-sought after prospect in the 2015 class. His doctors project him to grow to at least 6-feet 4-inches tall. His arm strength will continue to grow, but in eighth grade he threw a deep ball of 52 yards at Kaleo’s QB academy.

The freshman has started his recruiting process early. He has participated in three combines (twice at the BHSN/BCP Ignite Combine).

“There is lots of good competition so it makes me work harder,” Mayes said of what he enjoys about competing in combines. “I always try to beat my previous times. It also shows you what to expect for the upcoming years so I know how to practice for them.”

Although he didn’t get a lot of playing time as a freshman on the varsity football team, Mayes did run Berkeley Prep’s scout-team. Every day at practice Mayes competed against one of the top defenses in the county, including uber-talented Nelson Agholor.

“It taught me a lot, facing Nelson. It taught me to make the right choices because he’s a ball hawk, one of the best athletes in the country,” Mayes said. “He [Nelson] taught me to make the right choices. Going against him made my ball stronger, having to fit it in tight spaces. He just was an overall leader and still helps me in school and stuff.”
