Boca Ciega @ Tampa Catholic Fall Classic
Bullet Points
Final Score
Boca Ciega -28
Tampa Catholic – 20
• This game looked like the 1st game of the 2011 season. Very sloppy play by both teams, more so Tampa Catholic.
• Very evenly matched contest. Both teams had some quality skilled athletes and impressive size on the offensive line.
• Tampa Catholic fumbled two kickoff returns, losing one. Both setting up scores for the Pirates
• Boca Ciega had two touch downs called back because of holding calls. The Pirates mixed up the run and pass fairly well keeping the Crusaders on their toes.
• The combination of 2013 running backs, Fortune Gamble and Caleb McCullough was very productive from Boca. A healthy dose of inside zone and traps kept dives alive.
• I was very impressed with the size and talent of 2013, 5-9/190, RB Fortune Gamble. He showed great balance, used the stiff arm like an NFL vet, good speed and lateral movement. He is one to keep an eye on.
• Tampa Catholic senior DT, Taylor Timmons was a man child. He ended the first half with 4 tackles, 2 TFLs and 2 QB hurries. Rarely was the Boca offensive line able to block him. He lived in the backfield and was a total disruption to what the Pirates were trying to establish on offense.
• If there was a defensive MVP, the fight would be between Tampa Catholic line backers, TJ Harrell and Alex Maughan. Maughan finished the game with 7 tackles and two TFLs, but sophomore TJ Harrell were all over the place; 5 tackles, fumble recovery and an interception.
• Starting Tampa Catholic QB, Chivarski Corbett only played the 1st half after looking to get up a little shaky after a late 2nd quarter sack. Corbett ended his night 6 of 13 for 70 yards and a TD pass to Michael Clark
• Boca looked far more polished in this game. Several players were involved in scoring efforts and I was impressed with the play calling. Elijah McClendon, Diquez Henderson, Kenard Davis and Jaylaan Winbush all got on the board for the Pirates.
• Tampa Catholic running back, Jordan Rich-Rogers and Boca Ciega OLB/DE, Demeco Bristol are two very underrated prospects. Rich-Rogers was tough between the tackles for the Crusaders, while Bristol made life miserable for both Tampa Catholic QBs
• Boca Ciega fizzled out in the 2nd half of play after going into half time with a 20-6 lead. With Corbett out of the game, Chamberlain transfer Mitchell Norden entered and got plenty of help from his defense to spark a comeback for the Crusaders. The TC offense struggled, but a big hit by Zach Dier, causing a fumble, a TJ Harrell Interception and a punt block by Dominic Bourne…2 of 3 lead to scoring drives for the Crusaders.
