Jeremi Powell and Iman Smith made their college selections at the Pinellas Park Media Center on National Signing Day with – a bit – of a surprise.
Powell, a long-time Florida Gators commit, held a small hat selection which he says was mostly for show. He visited Marshall late in the recruiting game and liked it, so he wanted to make things interesting.
“I’ve always been a Florida guy,” he said after making his selection. “I liked Marshall, but Florida was for me.”
Iman Smith had offers from two in-state programs, but decided to pass both programs up and head to Middle Tennessee State.
Smith was expected to be selecting between Florida Atlantic and Florida International University, but a late visit to Middle Tennessee State sold him.
“I really fit in with the players and coaches,” he said. “They made me feel like family.”
Smith is a unique story. A long-time basketball player, he started playing football as a junior and quickly vaulted himself into the recruiting ranks. He could have, and should have, been a highly-sought after recruit, but starting late in the game left some of the larger schools standing by.
Smith will make an impact though. When we look back at the 2012 class we may see Smith as the biggest under-the-radar steal. He, much like Powell, has the ability to play either side of the ball and be a dynamic hybrid player.
