Matt Lepain has been name the new Head Coach of Palm Harbor University High School and will be announced to the team on Thursday. Matt replaces Mark Haye who led the Hurricanes for 2 years and compiled a record of 7-13. The firing of Haye was widely believed to be abrupt and un-just. Even still the PHUH Administration made the decision to go in a different direction and held to that.
Matt Lepain will be the 7th head coach of this 15 year old program who has not had a lot of success. They have one winning season (2008). That year led by Pete Just the Hurricanes were7-3 and missed a playoff berth by a heroic last play by Dunedins Adarius Bellamy during a district tie breaker. Lepain comes from a winning tradition at Largo HS. Largo was the class of the county for the last decade with multiple trips to region and state semifinals. During that time coach Lepain was the defensive coordinator and Largo has always been known for tenacious show stopping defense. While PHUH’s offense showed lots of promise last year their defense was one of the worst statistically in the county.
We will find out in the coming days how much of the old staff will remain.
