Cecil Cherry ready to leave it on the field

When Victory Christian LB, Cecil Cherry transferred from Frostproof at the end of last spring, winning a state title was definitely a possibility. Victory Christian was just coming off a state championship runner up performance and had the starting quarterback returning (along with other key players).

Just days before Victory Christian steps on the field with Indian Rocks Christian for the 2A state title game, Cherry had some time to reflect.

Your excitement level for this state championship game? “It’s wonderful to be in this shape to get a chance to win a state championship. I worked hard for this and God blessed me.”

In case you do not know, Indian Rocks Christian runs the “Heck” out the ball. It is a real possibility the Golden Eagles could end the season with three 100 yard rushers. IRC will run the ball ALOT. How will you stay discipline with the misdirection? “I will be running a lot. I’m going all out for this ring. What ever I got to do, I will to win a ring my senior year.”

Cherry committed to The University of Tennessee in the spring. A few family ties that bond him to the university made it feel almost natural to verbally pledge to the Vols. However, social media has been buzzing about Cherry wavering. Though a Tennessee commit, do you have interest in other schools? “I do have interest in Texas.”

Every good player has room to grow and improve. Cherry is no different. He was very straight forward when looking himself in the mirror and pointing out areas of his game that needed work.  What weakness did you improve this season? “I worked on my cover skills, getting to the ball, stopping the run and being an all around player. I improved not just one thing, but being a team player!”
