HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY RECRUITING

You come at the King, you best not miss: Wharton’s Shannon King

Omar from HBO’s The Wire gave us this priceless piece of advice when he delivered that line to Wee-Bey in season one regarding the “rules” of the game. It’s also priceless advice for another game–the one that requires tacklers to stop Wharton’s Shannon King.

The 2018 running back checks-in looking like a baby-Natrone Means at 5-feet-9, 209-pounds and is considered to be a “legend” from his days playing Pop Warner. Last season, King was entrenched as the number-two behind 1,100+ yard rusher Miles Williams but still turned in a solid season with 399 yards on 58 carries and six touchdowns. He even added 23 tackles, two sacks and a caused fumble from his outside linebacker spot.

Make no mistake about it–watch his film and you’ll see why he was a superstar at Pop Warner level. King can shake-and-bake defenders if he needs to, but we referenced a “baby” Natrone Means for a reason. This young man loves to go north-south and once he’s moving you might as well paint the letters “CSX” on the side of his helmet.

“He came to Wharton as a freshman, but didn’t play because his little league wouldn’t let him. That spring of his freshman season he finally came out and the FIRST carry he had in that game he had about three or four tacklers on him that we was carrying down the field. He just kept going–it was about a twenty yard run and it ended in a touchdown. Nobody could stop him.” Brown recalled.

King runs track as well and can move that frame. Auden Tate’s father is the track coach at Wharton and according to Brown–Tate is working with the young man to improve that speed. “He’s definitely gets yards-and-yards-yards after contact. He’s definitely someone to be watching this season.” said Brown.
