The Good and The Bad From Lakeland’s 27-6 Win Over Lake Gibson

Torrian Hampton, Lakeland

Lakeland, FL – When the lights were shut off the final score read Lakeland 27 Lake Gibson 6. The Dreadnaughts prevail again over their cross town rival at Bryant Stadium. The rain hit hard early but when it was time for kickoff, the weather cooperated allowing for the two teams to play for a full 48 minutes.

The Good

Lakeland – The Dreadnaughts were at their best when running the ball towards their sideline. They mixed up the no huddle and huddle to keep Lake Gibson slightly guessing. AJ Davis started off the season just as expected. A few touchdowns and a bunch of yards on the night. AJ was the brightest light on the offensive side of the ball. Showed strength and balance. Took a quick screen 65 yards for the first score of the second half. Lakeland’s offensive line was solid. Did well at level one, but struggled at times to cut off ensuing tacklers at level two. Defensively, the Dreadnaughts played fast. The back seven look to be much improved from last season. Dreadnaughts bent a little defensively, but never broke. Forced two Lake Gibson turnovers that lead to Lakeland scores. Played very well.

Lake Gibson – The Braves were at their best when Hunter Orem and the offense were in hurry up mode. The no huddle, quick attack pushed Lakeland back on their heels some. D. Kirkland made a few big plays to set up scoring opportunities for Lake Gibson. Defensively, the Braves were tough. Gave up one big play all night which was the 65 yard scamper by AJ Davis. Outside of that, Lakeland had to earn their keep.

The Bad

Lakeland – WR James Robinson did not play last night and it seemed as if Lakeland could not find a rhythm passing the ball. The passing game was the weakest facet of the Dreadnaughts performance. Look for them to improve this aspect of their game in a big way before next Friday Night.

Lake Gibson – Pretty easy here, Ball security! The Braves gave the ball away to the Dreadnaughts three different times on their own side of the field or right on the door step for Lakeland. Really handing the Dreadnaughts two scores by turning the ball over inside their own 5 yard line.

Biggest Surprise

Lakeland #9 Landlin May DT. When he was on the field, he was the best player. The 6-2/230 defensive lineman was a handful and played up field all night long. Violent, physical and played the game with a passion.

Prospect Spotlight

Lake Gibson’s Darrien Bomar was really good on the defensive side of the ball. The senior two-way starter made sure tackles, played with energy and was the emotional leader for the defense that played with their back against the wall for much of the contest.
