The floor is yours – Debatable questions for week 2

We are headed into the second week of action and it’s time to set the scene moving forward as the action kicks off less than 48 hours from now. Here are some of the topics we think have moved from absolutes to being eligible for spirited discussion as we head towards the games this week and perhaps even beyond.

-With their result last week versus East Lake and a very winnable game this week, does Palm Harbor University not only double their win total from 2014 (one victory) this week, but perhaps quadruple that tally or better the rest of the season? The ‘Canes will host Seminole this week before their bye-week then face five consecutive games in-district hosting Newsome, traveling to Sarasota-Riverview, home to Alonso, then road games at Manatee and Steinbrenner. They’ll then have a three-game finish with Tarpon Springs, Riverview and Dunedin all at home where they’ve shown they can defend home turf. Who knows? Could they go from 1-9 to perhaps 6-4? The floor is yours for debate…

-Is the winner of this week’s Countryside at Clearwater the number one team in Pinellas? The game this week between the Cougars and the Tornadoes might go down as one of the most anticipated public-school match-ups in a long, LONG time since the two have started blazing hot. There’s plenty of reasons to be hyped about the potential fireworks, but regardless of the way this one is won–and who the winner will be–is the impending result going to allow us to declare either one of these teams to be declared Pinellas’ top dogs? The floor is yours for debate…

-We believe that Nature Coast Tech is the number one team in Hernando County at the moment and it’s fairly clear. Even in a loss, Weeki Wachee looks like they can put up big chunks of points, Central showed they can run the ball and play tough defense against Springstead in a win and Hernando’s rushing game is hitting on all cylinders even though they took a tough loss to Fivay last week. Well, who’s number two? The floor is yours for debate…

-The Armwood Hawks put a thumping on a quality Plant City team while rebounding from a sputtering start in the preseason jamboree. We’ve been on record as saying if you want to try and put an ‘L’ on Armwood’s record–this is the season to make it happen–because the odds of them losing for the next two seasons will be very slim. Although the sample size is very small, the talent on the roster is hardly that. We all knew that once their young playmakers started to experience a little success and the game began to slow down for them–it would be “Katy bar the door!” for opposing teams. The topic for a little back-and-forth is–are the Hawks a year ahead of schedule? The floor is yours for debate…

-We asked a similar question in Hernando County, but we will ask the question of Pasco County–with a twist. Pasco, River Ridge and Sunlake have stated cases. The Pirates smashed Ridgewood in their week zero match-up, but had their hiccups against a game Victory Christian team–but we think the jury will be out on them until we see the results of the North Marion and Jesuit games before district play begins. River Ridge has a bruising run game and a defense of the same description. Sunlake has an interesting resume since they opened with East Lake, then Gulf–a real dichotomy of challenges–but ones they met with positive takeaways. River Ridge will play Sunlake, but not Pasco so there won’t be the head-to-head element to take into account. The topic is, who is the current (and eventual) number one? The floor is yours for debate…
