Tampa Catholic
ENVIRONMENT
Lots of anticipation in the air for the first day of pads. Both the offense and the defense were bouncing around and the coaches were dictating and directing. The start of practice had a nice flow to it until it was time for the much awaited “Oklahoma Drill”. In case you are not familiar with this contact drill, the video below will give you a good idea what it is and how it works.
Lots of parents floating on the sidelines at the Crusader practice field. Camera’s snapping and spectators commenting. Several college coaches observed today’s activities. Getting a good look at the headliners, TJ Harrell, Corey Martinez and Tre Watson.
ANY JUMPERS?
Kyle Ploucher, QB – Started the 7 on 7 session a little shaky. Over threw a few balls, missed on a few balls, just started a little off. Coaches got on him pretty good to get him going and going he did. Started to warm up mid way through the drill and caught fire in offensive team segment. Delivered some pretty touch passes and showed the arm with a few pretty deep balls.
FRESHMEN
Trevon Townsend – Made the biggest impression during the Oklahoma Drill. He was super physical and hungry to get as much contact as he could. As others tried to hide so they would not have to compete in the combat drill, Trevon had to be removed from the drill because he wanted to continue while others were not getting work.
Malik Barrow – The young defensive line has a pretty frame and uses his hands really well. During 1 on 1 pass rush drills, Malik showed his talents muscling past his offensive opponent.
STRENGTHGS – TOUGH TO TELL
One day of pads is not going to provide much information. However, the Crusaders should have a nice group of productive running backs. TJ Harrell and Kenny Bryant, both return to make a solid “One, Two punch” tandem. Along with a few more youngsters who carried the ball today, the stable behind the QB looks pretty good.
WEAKNESS – TOUGH TO TELL
Offensive line is not as big or athletic as they have been in the past. A few new bodies will replace the graduates and experience will be an issue. Corey Martinez will anchor the backside (left tackle) of the quarterback for the forth year straight and will be counted on to show the new faces the ropes.
