Spring Practice: Armwood

Armwood defense chases down the scout team RB during team defense

Seffner, FL – And then there was Armwood.  I watched the Hawks long and hard and tried to find a weakness.  I tried to see where could an offensive or defensive coordinator expose the Hawks.  Nothing!!! Solid…Scary how good they can be.  At some point you need to attend an Armwood practice.  When I arrived, there were 6-8 college coaches observing practice.  Coach Cal was juggling them while his assistants were running practice.  The players basically run practice.  They are excited, amped and everything is just about full GO!  The first D tries to eliminate the scout O and the 1st O takes every chance they get to drive a scout defensive player in the ground.  The practice is not overly structured which is why the kids seem to enjoy being there and it’s very competitive.  The offensive line is downright big and the defense is fast.  Leon McQuay is Leon…stud, Wade Edwards is probably my favorite player because he can do it all.  Javonte Sneed and Alvin Bailey make for a great WR tandum and Dees, Waldrop and McCoy are cut throat.  Now, the QB;  sucks for TBT that they lost Darryl Richardson, because by game 5, he’ll be in the discussion about best QBs in Tampa and at the end of the season he’ll have 15 or so offers and be one of the most talked about 2013 prospects in the Nation.  Note: he has been in an option offense for the past 2 years and needs coaching and experience, but he is all of 6-5, 230lbs, has a cannon of an arm, athletic as hell and his coaches say he is a pleasure to coach as he gets better daily.  Armwood can be beat (sounds good to say), but right now, it’s tough to say when they will lose.  As an Hillsborough Alum and ex-Hillsborough coach, it pains me to say that these guys are very impressive and I enjoyed their practice.
