HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY THE BOX

Sling & Shoot Day 1 Notes

Tampa, FL – University of South Florida held their annual sling & Shoot 7 on 7 tournament this weekend and a few Bay Area teams attended. Spoto, Steinbrenner, Plant, Armwood, Jesuit and Wharton all competed at a high level during a grueling day 1.

Notes

Exciting Games

Armwood vs. Steinbrenner: From 1st glance seemed to be a mismatch with the impression that the Hawks intimidated the Warriors before the

game even started. Just the opposite as the game took place. This game was back and forth and came down to who had the ball last. The Hawks attacked the warriors early, but the Warrior defense held. Both teams hit a rhythm and went back and forth scoring with the warrior realizing they could play with the #2 rated team in the nation. Matt Jones was superb in this game as he made some huge plays to slow down the Warrior rush. Warrior QB, Curtis Fitch was pretty efficient during this game, going through his pass progressions and checking down to RB, Jake Carroll when needed. Armwood won this game on a last second pass from Darryl Richardson to Alvin Bailey which crushed the Warriors after playing so well.

Wharton vs. Jesuit: Lots of talk before this game even started. Both teams were yapping back and forth at each other because one of the undefeated teams had to fall. The Battle of the QBs was a good one. Wharton’s, Chase Litton and Jesuit’s Tommy Eveld both showed precision and confident in their passes. Litton stands very cool in the so called “7on 7” pocket and was very accurate most of the game. Jesuit’s defense did force a couple coverage sacks where Litton had nowhere to go with the ball. Eveld has great arm strength and squeezed a few balls into receivers that were big league passes. This game was decided by the stars. Jesuit WR, Travis Johnson and Wharton WR/DB, Vernon Hargreaves went at it all game. Johnson got the best of Hargreaves for much of the game using his big frame to shied Hargreaves from the ball. Hargreaves did his thing on offense all day, but had a huge TD to tie the game vs. Jesuit. But at the end with time running out and the game tied, Hargreaves made a big time interception, keep his balance and stayed inbounds to give the Wildcats the 2 points they needed to take the win.

Random Observations

• Plant is stacked with young talent and 2 of 3 QBs I saw looked very good

• Armwood has 5 WRs that can beat you at any time. I’m not sure I heard coach Callahan say anything but “nice play so and so”.

• Tommy Eveld is good! Just waiting to see how he plays with pads

• Spoto has speed…Again! 6-4ft WR, Geronimo Allison, is athletic as heck.

• The combo of Chase Litton to Vernon Hargreaves was the best connection all day.

• Matt Jones showed out and made a number of big time plays

• Jack Carroll was a big surprise. Tough runner and soft hands
