Sickles controls their own destiny. With the head to match up win against Hillsborough tonight, a win versus Jefferson next Friday will pretty much seal the deal for a playoff birth in district 6A-8. BUT, all is not set! If Hillsborough defeats Armwood next week, we would likely see a 3 way tie and a Monday night shootout for district champ and runner up with all 3 teams having 1 loss in the district.
Hillsborough started fast after a short kick off by Sickles. The Terriers took advantage of the good field position and capped off the early drive with a Nigel Harris 25 yard TD run.
Both defenses would play good football before Nate Mills hit Bilal Salat on a deep post to make the score 8-6 Hillsborough. The Gryphons failed on a 2 point conversion.
Early in the second quarter. Sickles intercepted a Dwayne Lawson pass to take over on downs at the Terriers 29 yard line and scored from 1 yard out on a Ray Ray McCloud TD run. Sickles would kick the extra point, making the score 15-8 Sickles. Before the end of the quarter, Sickles missed a short field goal which would come back to bite them in the butt.
Dwayne Lawson led the Terriers down the field and ended the half with a 20 yard TD scramble. Terriers failed on the 2 point conversion and play suspended for the half, Sickles 16 Hillsborough 14.
Hillsborough jumped out early in the 3rd quarter with a 3 yard TD run and successful 2 point conversion and went up on the scoreboard 22-16. Late in the 3rd quarter, the Gryphon defense would produce a key interception and the offense did their job by scoring from 12 yards out. A made PAT gave Sickles a 23-22 lead.
Late in the game, Hillsborough attempting to get in field goal range, lined up and was stuffed on 4th and short by the Sickles defense. Sickles would run the clock out to stay alive in the class 6A district playoff race.
Impressive
Sickles: Nate Mills, QB – Did not start the game, but made a big impact and converted some big throws. Managed the game well.
Hillsborough: Nigel Harris, RB/LB – Played like a MAN on defense. Was everywhere and blasted a few Sickles ball carriers
