HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY SPRING CAPSULES

SC2011: Blake

2010 Record: 3-7

2011 District: Class 5A – 9
Blake

Lakewood
Lennard
Middleton
Robinson
Spoto

Short Capsule: Minus the one forfeited game in 2010, Blake had the best season since 2005, when the Jackets ended the season with a 4-6 record under Sean Washington. Blake surprised a lot of people last year with an upset over Lakewood and what seemed to be a playoff berth for the Jackets. Coach Hubbard is trying to break the cycle of losing ways at Blake; putting heavy focus on discipline, accountability and responsibility. Receiver, Dereon Telfair will be “That Guy” for Blake this year. Telfair is a big playmaker with excellent acceleration and game speed. For the Yellow Jackets to be successful the defense must improve. The defense allowed 286 points in 2010 and that will not be good enough for the jackets to get through the tough nine team 5A-9 district.

“Saying Goodbye” (graduation or transfer):
Eugene Davenport, QB
Marquis Kelly, Db
Centrell Austin, DE

“Hello Again” (key returners or potential Impact Players):
Zain Gilmore Jr, QB
Dereon Telfair, WR
Richard Newton, LB
De Andre James, SS

“Coach Speak:” “We have more depth this year. Compared to last year we started the year dressing only 24 players. Some kids who were forced into action as freshman will now become contributors. We expect to compete for a playoff spot after upsetting Lakewood last year.” ~ Carlos Blake, Defensive Coordinator

Fun Facts: The Yellow Jackets have only lost 12 seniors in the past two years to graduation.

“Must Have”:
• Must Beat Middleton!
• Run the ball effectively
• Create cohesiveness throughout team

“Uh-oh”: Like a few other schools in Hillsborough County, Blake cannot afford to lose any players for any reason because of the small roster.
