Reflections: Lakewood strong start separates from St.Pete

#77 Isaiah Wynn tries to persuade Lakewood offensive coaches to “Go for it” on 4th down and short.

When I arrived at the end of the first quarter, Lakewood had swiftly scored 21 points and St. Pete was looking to get their “0” off the board.  It appeared that the route was on and The Green Devils had no answer for the Spartans offense or defense.  The second quarter, both teams traded 3 and outs.  Lakewood was shaky offensively and St. Pete could not muster up much versus the Spartan defense.  At times, Spartan QB Ryan Davis did not look in sync with his receivers.  The ball was being thrown in one direction and the route were being ran in another direction.

St. Pete struggled on offense pretty much all game.  Lakewood was extremely sound, played in attack mode and showed discipline.  Green Devils executed a nice drive early in the third quarter when RB Deangelo Reeves broke off a few nice runs, slicing through the Lakewood defense and carrying his team into score range.  The Spartan defense would lock up and move St. Pete out, holding them to just 3 points.

Lakewood would score again early in the fourth quarter behind Romello Presely’s 2 yard touchdown run extending the Spartan lead to 28-3.  St. Pete caught a break midway through the 4th quarter. After a muffed punt return by SPT, Lakewood recovered putting them at the Green Devil 5 yard line.  Not much running room on 1st and 2nd down as St. Pete tighten up the defense to keep Lakewood out the promise land.  On third down, Ryan Davis over threw a short pop pass which was intercepted in the end zone by LB Maurice Hemingway and returned to the opposite 28 yard line.  The Green Devils went four and out after the turnover and Lakewood would drain the clock to preserve the win 28-3.

IMPRESSIVE
6-2/220 lbs DE/OLB Malik Brown was awesome. He was not highly rated on my prospect sheet, but made a big impression on me last night that unmistakably will bump him up. He was extremely quick off the ball, in the STP backfield at the same time the QB was making his handoff. The offensive tackles could not do much with him in passing situations. He was too fast and used his hands well to disengaged with the blocker. He had several tackles for loss and a few sacks. He was the best player on the field last night and if colleges football programs were in attendance, they would have been equally impressed.
