HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY THE BOX

Plant Transcends Dominance

Plant, Plant, Plant… You hear the rally cry and the 1st thing you think of is “Why do they sound like they are whining?”  Make no mistake about it that is no whine that is the sound of dominance.  The Football in Hillsborough County has become one of the most dominant in the state in recent times and each team has its own brand.  Plant, Plant, Plant is a brand and it is a brand of coaching acumen rivals all.  They essentially do more with less and tonight they proved that in glowing fashion.  They took apart a team that was far and away more talented than Plant and it was mostly due to coaching and adjustments.

Speaking of Dominance Plant has won the title in every big school classification (I know that technically they never won 7A but they won 5A which is essentially 7A now).  In 2006 and 2008 Plant won its 1st and 2nd titles in class 4A against Nease 25-21 and Lincoln 34-14.  In 2008 They won the class 5A title against Manatee in the Citrus Bowl 21-14.  This year they completed the big school tri-fecta in winning the 8A (old 6a) title game against Nationally ranked Miramar 31-20.  I do not think ANY school in state football history can boast that they moved up 3 classes and won a title in each one along the way (We will do some fact checking to confirm this shortly).

Another fact that is equally impressive is that every QB during the Robert Weiner era at Plant has won a state title.  Robert Marve started at Plant in 2004 and ended his Sr year with a state championship title in 2006.  Aaron Murray took over for Marve in 2007 and despite an injury that derailed his Sr season he came back in the semi-finals to lead his team to a state title in 2008.  Phillip Ely took over in 2009 and immediately led his team to a state title over Miramar.  It helped that he  played in relief of Murray the year before and kept the team on pace to win a title.  In Ely’s Sr. season he was injured most of the year but a young James Few stepped in for him.  It wasn’t even determined that he would be the starter until late in the off season but once he was named the starter it was clear that coach Weiner had another one.  James Few who was a back up QB and a defensive back all his years prior became the starting QB for Plant and led them to the state title game becoming the 4th QB to win a state title for Plant under Robert Weiner.

       Plant, Plant, Plant=Dominance.
