The Plant Panther defense revolves around the line backers. Even though the secondary has traditionally been good, the Panther LBs have always been the oil that runs the machine.
This year is no different. Andrew Beck has jumped into the center of the defense and has thrived. In 9 games, he has 39 solo tackles, 97 total tackles, averaging 10.8 tackles per game, 6 sacks and 5 pass defended. The 6-3 240 pound inside LB has a chance to be one of the best inside backers the Panthers have had in the Weiner era.
To date, Beck has verbal offers from USF and Duke with NC State and Cincinnati showing interest. He is a two way stud, plays TE also. However he feels he is more comfortable playing linebacker.
As the spring flew by, the summer came and went and now we are in the bottom half of the fall season, Beck has grown as player and is counted on as team leader. “I involve myself in a lot of the defensive game planning by watching film by myself and with coaches not only during the week, but Saturday and Sunday as well”. That is a habit of a young player wanting to grow into a stud.
Plant is headed to the playoffs and wanting to make a deep run. Beck will be key in their success. Looking ahead into the offseason, he does have goals. “I believe not only do I need to gain muscle weight, but I want to increase my speed and quickness by my senior year”. He is just a junior and has so much upside. He can run, hit and lead. All signs of a great player.
Like every good player, there is room for improvement and building on what they have learned. “I have learned that to play like a championship team, it is crucial to prepare that way. If you don’t prepare like a man and like you want it Friday night, you will not get the job done on the field. I have also learned that team defense is much more successful than one all star trying to make every play”.
