Pasco High Wins USF Sling & Shoot. Day 2 Play by Play

University of South Florida organized another great 7 on 7 Sling & Shoot Tournament. Saturday, 52 teams from all over the state of Florida played 6 pool games. Today (Sunday), each team started with 2 more pool play games which was followed by a brief break before the single game elimination tournament. 6 points were awarded for touchdowns, 1 or 2 points for a point after touchdown conversion and 3 points for an interception. Field dimensions: 45 yards long, 53 yards wide, three 15 yards zones (3 downs in zones 1 & 2. 4 downs in zone 4). The following observation were written as I was watching the game.

Round 1

Chamberlain QB, Mitchell Norden

Chamberlain vs. Clearwater Central Catholic
Chamberlain started off fast, dinking and dunking which transformed into a good drive and 6 points. Add a 1 point conversation pass from CHS QB, Mitchell Norden to WR, David Persaud and Chamberlain takes an early 7 point lead. On CCC’s first possession, facing 3 and 4 in zone 1, Blake Gomez finds a target and keeps the drive alive. Gomez looked very good on this drive, leading the Marauders to the end zone, but failing on the extra point: 7-6 Chamberlain with a defensive stop by Chamberlain. In zone 2 on 1st down, Gomez finds Tre Larry for a big time reception in the corner of the end zone. Pass interference call on the extra point, CCC gets half the distance to the goal and does not convert: 12-7 CCC. Very next play, Ronnie Scott to the house on a 35 yard reception. After a series of back to back scoring, Chamberlain leads 19-18 and held on to win the ball game. Chamberlain moves on, CCC goes home.

Round 2
Alonso vs. Mainland
Mainland scores 1st and fast on a 5 yards reception and a failed extra point conversation. Alonso took possession and methodically moved the ball down the field. Brandon Hawkins drove the Ravens to the end zone taking what the defense was giving: 6-6 all. Mainland’s next possession was smooth and quick attacking the interior and exterior of the Raven defense. On 4th and goal, the Ravens kept the Mainland offense out of the end zone giving momentum to the Raven offense. 3 and out for the Ravens and a 1st down 45 yard TD reception for Mainland and converted extra point: 13-6 Mainland. Another 3 and out for Alonso, Mainland goes back to work on offense as the air seemed to be slowly going out of the Raven balloon. Raven’s defense holds. After a series of good defensive stops. Mainland QBs, Shelton Willis converts on a 35 yard TD pass: 19-6 Mainland. Marcus Mosley, with a big TD catch and Alonso and Alonso also converts their extra point attempt: 19-13 Mainland. Mainland wins 19-13. Mainland moves on, Alonso goes home.

Countryside vs. North Broward Prep
Gray Crow looked like a Big Time D1 QB on the first possession, converting a TD and 2 point conversion: 8-0 Countryside. Broward QB, Chris Fitzpatrick marches right down the field, but stalls on 4th down vs. a stiff Cougar goal line defense. After a great drive, Crow and the Cougars step into a 4th and goal situation from the 3 yard line only to throw an interception: 8-3 Countryside. Broward fights right back with a score of their own: 9-8 Broward. Next possession, Crow hits Diomi Roberts on a 25 yard pass to set up an AJ Sattinger score (2 point good): 16-9 Countryside. Cougar interception: 19-9 Countryside. Crow converts on 3rd and goal with a 10 yard TD toss: 25-9 Countryside. Interception Countryside to seal the win. Countryside wins 28-9 to move on, North Broward Preps goes home.

Plant vs. Blake
Plant and Blake trade 3 and outs on their first possession, then the Panthers strike on a 40 yard pass from James Few to Austin Aikens. Blake fires back on 1st down with a 45 yards TD pass from Zain Gilmore: 6-6 all. On the next Blake possession, Plant defense causes Blake QB to hold the ball and eventually Plant’s Paris Bostic gets an early Christmas gift in the form of an interception: 9-6 Plant. Blake holds on defense, takes over on downs, drives down to zone 3, but Gilmore throws his second interception to Bostic again: 12-6 Plant. James Few orchestrates a series of 1st down conversations to put the Panthers in a 4th and goal situation from the 6 yard line. Few rolls right and finds Derek Mann crossing to the opposite side of the field for the TD (failed extra point): 18-6 Plant. Napoleon Moore takes over at QB for the Yellow Jackets and starts hot with a few nice passes to put the Yellow Jackets at 3rd and Goal from the 14. Bostic again ends the Yellow Jackets drive with another interception: 21-6 Plant. Derek Mann and Austin Aikens seal the game for the Panther with a few timely catches and a Derek Mann TD reception (extra point good): 28-6 Plant. Blake goes home, Plant moves on.

Tarpon Springs vs. Pasco
TS goes 3 and out on their 1st possession: 7-0 Pasco. Pasco QB, Jacob Guy marches the Pasco offense right down the field with a 13 yard TD strike and converted extra point: 14-0 Pasco. Tarpon goes 3 and out in zone 2, Pasco takes over on downs. Guy once again puts Pasco in the end zone after a good defensive stop: 21-0 Pasco. Following possession, the Sponger offense finally found a rhythm with some key passes and receptions from Louie Pappas to Dondre Daley that lead to a Sponger TD: 21-6 Pasco. In zone 2, on 3rd and short, Pasco QB, Jacob Guy completes a huge 3rd down pass and then a big 1st down pass in zone 3 and followed that up with a TD pass to kill the Spongers hopes: 27-6 Pasco. Pasco moves on, Tarpon Springs goes home.

Plant 1 vs. Armwood

Darryl Richardson starts the game off with a 40 yard pass to Alvin Bailey to set up 1st and goal from the 5. Pass interference Plant, makes it 1st and Goal from the 3. Both Matt Jones and Javonte Sneed are out for this game. On 2nd and goal Richardson finds Greg Newton in the end zone on a speed out (extra point good): 7-0 Armwood. Plant QB, Aaron Banks takes charge of the Plant offense and moves them to zone 3 completing 3 of 4 passes. On 1st down, Wesley Bullock finds the soft spot in the Armwood defense for the TD (extra point good): 7-7 all. Next Armwood possession, Richardson quickly moves the offense to zone 3 on a 25 yard scamper to Alvin Bailey. After an offensive pass interference call, Armwood scores on a controversial Bailey reception which seemed that the ball did not cross the goal line: 14-7 Armwood. On 3rd and goal from the 7, Armwood safety Leon McQuay makes a big pass break up and the Hawk defense holds on 4th down. On the following possession Wade Edwards takes a 16 yard pass, 22 extra yards, to the 7 yard line. Armwood scores on the following play (extra point no good): 20-7 Armwood. Plant answers with a 45 yard pass from Banks to Bullock. (2 point conversion no good): 20-13 Armwood. Richardson answers back with 30 yard pass to Edwards to get down to the 1 yard line. On 4th on goal, Darryl Richardson splits out wide left and Alvin Bailey tries his hand at QB; pass incomplete. Time expires and Armwood wins: 20-13. Armwood moves on and Plant goes home.

Countryside vs. Jesuit
Jesuit scores first: 6-0 Jesuit. Gray Crow rips the Jesuit defense with a few sharp passes leading to a 15 yard TD strike: 12-6 Countryside. Dropped Eveld pass leads to a Countryside interception: 15-6 Countryside. Crow drives the Cougar offense down the field and then rips off a beautiful comeback route for a TD: 21-6 Countryside. Eveld fights back with a 45 yard TD pass on 1st down: 21-12 Countryside. Nico Morgado grabs a 7 yard TD pass from Crow (extra point no good): 27-12 Countryside. Jesuit comes back with a 35 yard pass and catch from Eveld to Travis Johnson. But the Tigers drive stalls with an interception: 30-12 Countryside. Jesuit holds on defense to take over on downs. Jesuit switches QBs and moves the ball some. Tigers, Travis Johnson gets in the end zone (extra point no good): 30-18 Countryside. Countryside wins 30-18. Countryside moves on, Jesuit goes home.

Gather vs. Armwood
McGough starts fast with a 28 yard TD pass to Shug Oyegunle: 6-0 Gaither. Armwood moves the ball some, but Gaither kills the drive with an interception: 9-0 Gaither. Following Gaither possession, McGough throws a 28 yard TD pass: 15-0 Gaither. Alvin Bailey reels in a TD pass from Richardson making the score 15-6. Gaither has heavy momentum and Armwood looks shell shocked. Gaither Alex McGough is playing very well. Taking everything the defense is giving him and not forcing anything: 21-6 Gaither. Following possession, Richardson to Bailey on a 40 yard pass. On 4th and goal from the 1, Richardson finds Wade Edwards for the TD reception (2 point conversion no good) 21-12 Gaither. McGough again presses the Armwood defense all the way to the end zone: 27-12 Gaither. Darryl Richardson brings the Armwood offense to life hitting Jarvis McCall in the corner of the end zone (2 point conversion good): 27-20 Gaither. Following Gaither possession, McGough with a 45 yard TD strike (extra point no good): 33-20. Gaither wins. Gaither moves on, Armwood goes home.

Countryside vs. Pasco
Arrived at this game with 5 mins. remaining: 22-9 Pasco.
Jacob Guy adds point for the Pirates on an easy dink and dunk pass: 29-9. Following Cougar offensive possession Crow hits 3 different receivers eventually leading C-side to a score and 2 point conversation. Pasco moves on, Countryside goes home: 29-17 Pasco.

Pasco vs. Gaither
Pasco QB, Jacob guy makes it look easy for the Pirates, picking apart the Gaither defense and ending his first drive with a 12 yard TD pass (extra point good): 7-0 Pasco. After a few good balls by Alex McGough, he throws an interception on 3rd and short: 10-0 Pasco. Gaither defense holds in zone 1, getting the ball back for the offense. On 3rd and 5, McGough hits Shug Oyegunle on a 40 yard bomb (extra point no good): 10-6 Pasco. Pasco comes right back with a 20 yard TD pass on the left sideline and converts the extra point: 17-6 Pasco. Pasco defense then forces and interception: 20-6 Pasco. Gaither defense forces a 3 and out in zone 2 and the offense takes possession. Jacob Guy has looked sharp all game. Guy makes a pretty 17 yard TD pass in the right back corner of the end zone: 27-6 Pasco. The Cowboys then score on a 45 yard pass and fail on the extra point: 27-12. Pasco Wins USF Sling and Shoot
