Notes from the Freddie Solomon Football Showcase

A group of 100-plus Tampa Bay football players gathered at the University of Tampa on Saturday afternoon to compete in the DeBartolo Sports University, Freddie Solomon Football Showcase.

The showcase featured combine testing as well as individual work and commenced with 1-on-1’s.

A number of players impressed, both players we expected to perform well and players we didn’t know.

2013 Class –

Richard Benjamin, WR Tampa Bay Tech – A versatile athlete, Benjamin worked as a WR and CB at the showcase where he appeared to have his way. He made a number of acrobatic catches as a WR. Solid route running, good hips, good speed/quickness, good hands and body control are a few of the reasons why he is such a hot commodity in the 2013 class.

Nate Godwin, DB Freedom – I’ve been hearing about his ability to play CB for quite some time, but had to see it to believe it. Widely known as a physical, downhill safety, Godwin showcased his footwork, back pedal and ability to change direction throughout 1-on-1’s. Godwin clocked a 4.49 forty (laser) proving he has the top end speed that may have previously been in question. He’s a physical DB who likes to use his hands and strength at the line.

Devyn Salmon, DL Plant City – Approaching 280 pounds, Salmon is a budding DL prospect. He showed off his violent hands and strength today bench pressing 185 pounds 30 times. Quick feet, high motor and a fast get off make Salmon the No. 2 DT in Tampa Bay.

Robert Davis, RB Carrollwood Day School – He’s often underrated because of the competition CDS plays against, but there is no denying how talented Davis is. Quick, agile, versatile Davis lined up at DB during 1-on-1’s and, although rusty, showed his talented footwork, backpedal and hip movement.

Other top Performers
Seth Crowell, OL/DL Plant City
Eric Hood, RB/LB East Bay
Jaykwon Hosey, LB Hillsborough
John Franklin, DE Blake
Joe Davis, WR Plant City

2014 Class –

Chris Carpentier, QB East Bay – All the measurables at 6-6 the rising junior has a strong, accurate arm. He threw the deep out and comeback routes well. The East bay triple option will show off Carpentier’s rushing abilities this year. He holds the ball high and needs to work on his footwork, but Carpentier appears to have a bright future.

Other top Performers
Rayquan Johnson, QB Brandon (Transferring to Plant City)
Justin Jackson, QB Blake
Deondre Romeo, LB East Bay

2015 Class –

Nate Ferguson, DB Freedom (Transferring to Sickles) – Keep his name at the top of your 2015 lists. Ferguson has the makings of a lock down corner with good feet and the ability to mirror opposing WR moves.
