THE BOX

Notes from: Chamberlain, Middleton and Jefferson

Wiregrass Ranch at Chamberlain
I caught the first quarter at Chamberlain, where the Chiefs hosted the Wiregrass Bulls. The Bulls were not really outmatched, but some what out played in the little period of time. Chamberlain used their hurry up offense to punch a 65 yard scoring drive in the end zone. RB Xavier Johnson did not start the game due to disciplinary reasons, but the Chief offense did not miss a beat. Wiregrass defense played tough but the athletic gap began to get wider as the game went on. James Jackson (2014) jumped out at me. A 6-4 DE/WR for Wirgrass. He has really good feet and changes direction at the defensive end position very well. Chamberlain 32 Wiregrass 3

Gibbs at Middleton
Both teams are missing a true quarterback. Especially Gibbs. The Gladiators have a few of the best skilled players in Tampa Bay, Zacarri Gibbons and Albert Laskett. If Gibbs had a QB to get them the ball, the Gladiators would be a much better team.

Middleton did a lot of things right to jump out to and early 17-0 lead. A heavy dose of Amp Carswell kept Gibbs on their heels. The Middleton defense, led by Arthur Wiggins was flying around. What hurts the Tigers is depth. Too many guys on the offense and defensive line were going both ways and were get a little tired. Arthur Wiggins has the potential to be a special player. He looks to love playing football and he can be an intimidating presence for an opposing offense. Middleton 20 Gibbs 18

Sickles at Jefferson
When I arrive, the Dragons were down 14-7 starting the second half. Defense earned Jefferson the win. It was a “bend, but don’t break” attitude for the Jefferson Dragon defense. Sickles attempted to wear down Jefferson by running Ray Ray McCloud several times and mixing in a few passes by Nate Mills. They were successful, but then the Dragon defense clamped down forcing Sickles to punt several times. After a few costly Sickles turnovers, the Dragon offense made them pay with an incredible Deiondre Porter 49 yard QB sneak on 4th down and 1 yard. That run tied the game. Then the Jefferson offense leaned on the big tailback Shaq Speights and kept moving the chains and killing the clock before finally scoring on a Jon Moore TD reception.

But the game was not over. Under 2 mins left in the game, Nate Mills would drive Sickles to the Jefferson 15 yard line with a chance to get the Gryphons in the end zone. Dragons would intercept a Mills pass, the offense took the victory formation on the field and the game would end. Jefferson 21 Sickles 14
