No. 4 Jesuit Outruns No. 7 Robinson to 21-7 Win

The Jesuit Tigers outlasted the Robinson Knights in a defensive battle to win 21-7 on Friday night. The game was tied 7-7 at halftime with Jesuit only having 108 (36 rushing, 72 passing) yards of total offense. The Tigers would finish with 114 yards on the ground, led by freshman Kevin Newman who ran 10 times for 34 yards, 1 TD. Will Lucas, Tommy Eveld and Rico Gonzalez would all tally at least 25 yards on the ground as eight Tigers carried the ball.

The air attack came alive for Jesuit in the second half. Eveld completed 6-of-7 passes for 68 yards, after completing just 6-of-17 passes in the first half. He spread the ball around nicely connecting with four receivers. Top prospect Travis Johnson was blanketed all night by Byron Pringle, but was able to reel in a three catches for 37 yards. Most notably Johnson caught a 15 yard pass, fightning forward for extra yards.

“The o-line did a great job giving me time,” Eveld said. “When we realize we can’t go to Travis [Johnson] because he’s covered we know we have four other great athletes to go to.”

Robinson WR/DB Byron Pringle was a big factor defensively, but he wasn’t able to make a huge impact offensively for the Knights. RHS QB Antonio Hampton was sacked four times and hurried a number of times more as the Tigers did a nice job mixing up alignments.

When Hampton did have time he was successful, completing 6-of-10 passing attempts for 63 yards. Pringle was the recipient of 3 of those catches for 59 yards.  Hampton also threw an interception late in the game as the Knights were attempting to come back from a 14-point-deficit with under two minutes to go.

“Defense held a high-powered offense to seven points,” Eveld said. “I’m almost speechless the defense did such a great job. The d-line did a great job pressuring the quarterback as well.”  Highlights HERE
