Nasty Nine: Biggest Hitters in the BCP Coverage Area.
1. Cecil Cherry, Frostproof 2015 LB – Splitting hairs between Derwin James and Cecil Cherry at the top spot for the Nasty 9. But this is why Cecil edges out James: Derwin James has the luxury of allowing the play to develop from 12 yards deep and adjusting his angle to decapitate ball carriers. Cherry does not have that privilege. He must read, react and find the call within seconds and within a small confined area. The advantage Cherry has is “Chances.” Because the nature of his positions and alignment to the line of scrimmage, Cherry has more chances to explode on ball carriers and he does it often. On his film, he dislodges ball from player so often, it looks like the same play is being repeated.
2. Derwin James, Haines City 2015 ATH – The human highlight film. It is tough to find a player to compare to him. His athletic ability on both sides of the ball and viciousness he plays with on defense makes him our top 2015 prospect. James plays reckless when it comes to knocking ball carriers off their feet.
3. Kelvin Broome, Lakeland 2016 LB – Another big hitter from Polk County. Tenacious when coming out of his pass drop and blowing up the crossing routes. Broome finds the ball in hurry and is nibble enough to get over trash and blast running backs head on.
4. Carson Lydon, East Lake 2015 LB – At times, it looks as though Lydon is a nasty (in a bad way) player. The hit could be a tad “Too Hard” or came a second too late. The reality is, he is a nasty (in a good way) player. He plays mean and brings the hurt when he thumps opponents.
5. Jaye Miner, Wiregrass Ranch 2015 LB – When the 6-3 frame hits you, start counting the Tweety Birds and have the trainer bring the ice bags. Miner’s advantage is his range. Because he gains speed in a few steps, he surprises ball carriers with his power.
6. Craig Watts, Gibbs 2016 S
7. Marchello Judge, Tampa Bay Tech 2016 CB
8. Kame Taylor, Dunedin 2017 ATH
9. Cody Endris, Tampa Catholic 2015 LB
