E7 Trainging Camp: Get Trained, Get Looks, Get Ranked
E7 Trainging Camp: Get Trained, Get Looks, Get Ranked

Having never visited Sunlake high school prior to yesterday, I had no idea what to expect. What kind of program, organization, quality of athletes? All were questions I wanted answers to.

The flow and tempo of practice was pretty good during my short stay. The kids were focused, the coaches had control over the practice and learning was taking place.

I turned my attention to spotting athletes. Two kids stood out amongst the mass:

Eddie Burgos, CB, 2013: Really nice frame. Broad shoulders and strong looking lower body. He stands about 5-11 and I would guess around 175lbs. I was really impressed with his change of direction. During 7 on 7, several times I observed him make smooth transitions in and out of his breaks and burst to the drive point.

Will Alvarez, DE, 2015: This is what it is all about. This young man has the potential to be a beast. And he is just a rising sophomore. Alvarez currently plays DE and FB for the Seahawks, but if he doesn’t get any taller he will be a really good DT prospect. At 6-1/240 the big boy is lower body heavy with a great set of shoulders and arms. Oh and he can go. No one knows about this kid yet and not many scouts are busting the door down to get to Sunlake. However, Alvarez could develop into a really attractive prospect.

SUBJECT: Carroll is back

3-7, 5-5 and last season 7-3. Impressive for a young program who has only been playing varsity football for 3 seasons. The proof is in the pudding. Steinbrenner is not blessed with an abundant amount of talent. They don’t have any all-star coaching names on staff. They don’t have any big name prospects. What they do have is structure and confidence.

Before you visit Steinbrenner:
• Put on walking shoes – practice field is about 3.3 miles from the parking lot
• Bring shades – You will be looking directly into the sun while spectating
• Be ready for more trash talk between coaches than players…BIG FUN!

Unfortunately, last season 2014 RB, Jake Carroll went down with a season ending knee injury. I think he is back. I watched him burst straight ahead and waited to see him plant and cut to see if he trusted his knee and how strong it was. Didn’t have that opportunity. Carroll said he feels great and he looked good also.

I got all excited when I saw CB, Trey Johnson. 6-1/170l, long arm kid. This young man made my day. Awesome transition and change of direction. Very loose hips and superb ball skills. I really knew nothing about him and became a big fan in 35 minutes.

Other Notes:
Jesuit prospects, 2013 CB, Reggie Brown and 2014 DE/TE, Vincent Jackson picked up offers yesterday. Brown received a verbal offer Toledo, while Jackson picked up Missouri and Toledo.
