Orlando, FL – It was a lot to a little…A lot of LSU defense and very little Louisville offense. Led by First team all SEC safety Jamal Adams, the LSU defense swarmed the football all game long holding Heisman Trophy winner Lamar Jackson to 186 total net yards. Jackson was held to just 10 completion, 3 caught by James Quick with a long of 53 yards.

The LSU defense was too big, fast and strong for the outmanned Louisville Cardinals. UL WRs struggled to gain separation versus the LSU secondary which led to several coverage sacks. Combined with the constant pressure of the Tiger defensive line, LSU totaled 8 sacks.

On offense, sophomore RB Derris Guice took home the Bowl MVP award rushing for a game high 138 yards and 1 TD on 26 attempts. LSU QB Danny Etling finished the game 16 of 29, 1 INT and 2 TDs throwing for 217 yards. Tiger offense kept the pocket clean as Etling was only sacked once.

Quotable:
UL Coach BOBBY PETRINO on post game conversation with team
“Yeah. We got beat by a good football team. We knew coming in that they were very good on defense and in the front seven, guys that are big and strong and physical, and they’ve got really good cover guys. I think we hurt ourselves early in the game with negative plays, either assignment errors or good pass rushes and not being able to get the ball out and throw it away.”

UL QB LAMAR JACKSON on his take aways of the game
“Everything, just getting better with my team, getting everything down pat and perfecting my craft. There was a lot of mistakes each and every one of us made out there. It was a great team, like Coach said, and we’ve just got to come back stronger next year.”

LSU Coach ED OREGON on his team’s performance
“You got great players. Let them play, right? Awfully excited about our football team, the way they bought into one team, one heartbeat. We’re like that right now and I’m so proud of them. They played tremendously today against a great Louisville football team, a great job by our staff of coming on the road, preparing our guys to play like we did today. It was a dominating performance.”

LSU RB DERRIUS GUICE on his MVP day
“Well, the coaches did a great job preparing us for this game. The whole team, we were disappointed with our season in that we didn’t make the playoffs, but we had to look who we were facing in the bowl game, and that really made us fired up, because we were going against the Heisman trophy winner. So as you can see today, the defense played a heck of a game and, you know, shut them down. With me, Coach O and the offense and Coach [Jabbar] Juluke did a great job of getting all of us ready. The O-line did a great job, the fullback. Danny [Etling] did a great job with the pass game to open up the running lanes, and everything just executed the way we planned. We came out victorious.”
