Lakeland holds on to defeat Winter Haven, 14-13

The Lakeland Dreadnaughts stopped an attempted two-point conversion run in the last minute of the game to defeat the Winter Haven Blue Devils, 14-13.

Dreadnaughts opened the scoring with a 74 touchdown drive predominantly on the legs of junior running back Anthony”AJ” Davis. It would stay 7-0 until the fourth quarter when the Blue Devils would drive 65 yards mainly on the arm of junior quarterback Will Tate to tie the game with a 1-yard touchdown run by senior running back Tekendrick Roberson. Lakeland responded with a 65-yard touchdown drive of their own on the arm and legs of junior quarterback Holden Hotchkiss who hit junior wide receiver James Robinson for a 40-yard gain and Holden scored on a keeper from the 1-yard line to put the Dreadnaughts up 14-13. Will Tate would stay hot and he would drive Winter Haven 77 yards mainly through the air to pull within 14-13 after he scored from the 1-yard line. After a Dreadnaught off-side penalty on the extra point attempt, the Blue Devils decided to try for a two-point conversion but the Lakeland defense stuffed the run attempt with 24 seconds left to win the game.

A.J. Davis rushed 26 times for 136 yards and 1 touchdown. Holden Hotchkiss was 9-of-13 for 92 yards and had one touchdown on the ground. James Robinson caught 4 passes for 60 yards.

On defense, Lakeland got an interception from junior defensive lineman Marques Greene, multiple tackle-for losses by senior linebacker Kelvin Broome, a deflection that led to the interception and a tackle-for-loss by senior defensive end Matt Kramer.

Will Tate went 16-for-28 for 185 yards and had one rushing touchdown. Sophomore wide receiver Terrance Anglin had 7 receptions for 71 yards and sophomore running back Javeon Marlow had 3 catches for 56 yards.

Winter Haven’s senior linebacker Dominique Northern had a forced fumble, sack, and tackle-for-loss.

Dreadnaughts improved to (6-2, 1-1) and will host Blanche Ely from Pompano Beach, FL (2-5) while Winter Haven falls to 5-3 (0-2) will host Bartow (4-3, 1-1) in 2 weeks.
