HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY POLK COUNTY

In Review: Bucs, Vikes and Blue Devils

Lakeland Christian and Berkeley Prep went toe to toe last Thursday and Friday as the game was postponed Thursday night till Friday night due to the weather.  In the end, Lakeland Christian would ride home with smiles on their faces after BCP Boot Camp Kicking Showcase standout, Grady Sharpe hit the game winning field goal in double over time (27-24 Final).

Berkeley Prep chewed up the yards and the clock. They were very methodical and some what pushed Lakeland Christian around. The offense amasses 396 total yards.  QB Brad Mayes was good.  Threw the ball 26 times, completing 68 % of his passes (15/26), 2 TDs and took care of the ball by throwing zero interceptions.  Freshman RB Gordan Stetson averaged 4.3 yards per carry, ending the game with 120 yards on 28 carries.

However, Lakeland Christian was very opportunistic. Made the big play when it needed to be made.  QB Christian Alexander was efficient. Managed the ball game and took care of the ball.  He ended the game 11/16 for 122 yards, 2 TDs and 0 INTs. RB TJ Simmons busted an 80 yard TD on Lakeland Christian’s first play from scrimmage and added 53 more yards after that.  Simmons finished with 133 yards on just 13 carries.

#3 Winter Haven QB. Darian Mills

Winter Haven was focused on getting better defensively.  Prior to shutting out Evans, Winter Haven had allowed 91 points in their 3 previous games.  Their offensive depth is really starting to show.  Still down a few starters, roll players are starting to evolve into key players.

The Blue Devils have big play ability with Kendrick Holland.  They have been steady and gritty with Kendrick Robertson carring the ball more and more and very effectively. QB Darian Mills has embraced the role of the position, transitioning from CB last season.

The Blue Devils have another big test this week.  Mills, Holland and Robertson will face the Kathleen Red Devils who are playing very confident after defeating Ridge 42-13 last Friday.  Both teams are ranked in our Sweet 16. #7 Winter Haven and #9 Kathleen will enter this game 3-1, but one will exit 4-1 and the other 3-2.

BIGGEST SURPRISE SO FAR?

– Wiregrass at 2-2 after losing 20 straight games from 2011-2012?

– Hudson getting plenty of ink for the right reasons after winning 4 games in the last three years. Now sitting at 3-1. Big Surprise?

– Robinson, a semi-final team a year ago. Now looking for the first win after starting the season 0-4. Big surprise?

– King? Lions went 5-5 in 2011 and 3-7 in 2012. Then went 3-0 this year before last Friday’s loss to Chamberlain.

– Northeast? District runner up last season, playoff team and now 0-4 and have not scored 1 single point in any game this season.
