As we begin to wrap up our BHSN/BCP Ignite Showcase coverage, college prospects and top performers get the shine. Ignite is a tool used to evaluate talent. Talent comes in different shapes and sizes. However, talent combined with size, speed and potential make for top, major division one prospects.
Many players and supporters get performers/players confused with prospects. In a perfect world, productive players = major college prospects. However, we live in an imperfect world with a college recruiting process that seeks out potential rather than production.
The biggest argument we receive from supporters: Feeling a productive high school player should be a good college prospect because of statistics, individual accolades and accomplishment. We often get “John John ran for 1800 yards last year and was an All Area selection two years in a row.” This is great. They are memories and accomplishments that cannot be taken away from a high school player. It is what the game is all about. The team, the brotherhood, the grind….But if a productive player does not have the ideal size, speed, change of direction, explosion, acceleration, etc., it will be hard for that player to be a major college prospect.
The moral is, production does not ALWAYS equal college prospect as much as we would like it to. So we acknowledge those who perform well along side of our major college prospects.
Below are our Top major college prospects that performed at Ignite and our Top Ignite performers. Our top QB prospect is 6 foot 5 inches, but a sophomore QB won MVP. Our top RB prospect is 6 foot, runs a 4.5 forty-yard dash and changes directions like a WR. But the RB MVP is 5 foot 5 inches and owned the combine.
Those are just a few examples of how the best prospect, may not have the best day. But the best performer may not be the best college prospect. When the top performers/players are also the Top Prospects, we then have the perfect combo!
There are many different levels of college football and the major D1 programs make up a small percentage of the schools that play football. Because a student athlete may not be a Major D1 prospect, he may certainly be a D1AA, D2, D3 or NAIA prospect. Those are the players were spend plenty of time promoting. The competition is still stiff no matter the level of college football.
