Hudson Cobras defeat Weeki Wachee Hornets 23-13
Hudson’s senior defensive lineman Drake Carson picked up a bad snap on the game’s opening drive and ran it back 66 yards for a touchdown to put the Cobras up 7-0. The Hornets had gotten off with a bang on the first play of scrimmage when senior running back Shawn O’Gorman took a short pass from junior quarterback Alec Cromie and turned it into a 40-yard gain. Both defenses settled in and forced punts the next three drives for each team until Weeki Wachee’s Cromie scored from one yard out midway through second quarter after a short Hornets drive to tie the score at 7. After a failed onside kick and Hudson drive from midfield, senior running back Billy Werner scored from the 9-yard line to put the Cobras up 14-7.
Weeki Wachee’s junior linebacker Paul Herrmann recovered a muffed kickoff to open the second half and four plays later junior running back Montae Bostick scored on a 23-yard run to close the gap to 14-13. The extra point was missed. Hudson would answer just three plays later following a 42-yard run by Billy Werner senior quarterback Nate Munson ran it in from 10 yards to make the score 20-13. The extra point was missed. The Hornets’ next drive assisted by a 20-yard run by Shawn O’Gorman would get inside the Cobras 10-yard line but Cobras’ defense would stiffen with a sack by senior linebacker Dante Miller and two pass breakups on receivers in the end zone by junior linebacker Spencer Shoun. Cobras added a mid fourth quarter 32-yard field goal by senior kicker Eric LaRoche.
Hudson’s Billy Werner rushed 18 times for 176 yards and 1 touchdown and Nate Munson rushed 19 times for 83 yards (included were a few bad snap losses from the shotgun formation that Nate had to fall on) and a touchdown. Munson also hit on 8-of-11 passes for 83 yards and his favorite target was junior wide receiver Harley Ambrowsky with 4 catches for 61 yards.
The Cobras defense got contributions from Drake Carson, not only his early scoop and score, but he also had a tackle-for-loss & a quarterback hurry, junior defensive lineman Corey French had 2 tackle-for-losses and a quarterback hurry, Dante miller had a tackle-for-loss and a sack, and lastly, Spencer Shoun would end the night with 3 pass breakups, a tackle-for-loss and rushed for 32 yards on 4 carries.
Weeki Wachee’s Shawn O’Gorman had 158 All-Purpose yards including 13 rushes for 61 yards and 3 catches for 67 yards. Alex Cromie was 13-of-25 for 178 yards and had one rushing touchdown. Montae Bostick had 5 carries for 36 yards and one touchdown, had one catch for 15 yards, and had a tackle-for-loss on defense.
Defensively, the Hornets’ got a tackle-for-loss and a forced fumble from sophomore linebacker Andrew Lynch.
Next week, Hudson (1-1) host Anclote (0-2) and Weeki Wachee (1-2) has a bye week.
