Frostproof and Fort Meade prospects put on a show

Frostproof defeated Fort Meade 20-14 in a game laced with unexpected plays, excitement, fan fair and intensity. Over 10 division 1 prospects competed at Faris Brannen stadium last night. Here are a few players who stood out.

Note: Hard to mention offensive linemen without review film.

FROSTPROOF

Cecil Cherry, Frostproof 2015 LB

FB/LB Cecil Cherry
As good as advertised as a football player. 6-2/230 lbs and athletic as heck, allows him to be so active on both sides of the ball. Runs the ball like the former FSU RB, Greg Jones and as physical at linebacker as…well, himself, Big hitter; Blew one kid up on a screen play, causing a fumble which his team recovered. At times does not read his keys, which makes him a step behind the play. But when he does everything correct, he meets the ball carrier at the handoff.

QB Xavier Gaines
Wait until he becomes more polished. Just a sophomore, but so much upside. Big, strong runner and strong arm. Needs to get rid of the ball faster, holds it a little long in the pocket. However, runs extremely hard and tough to bring down. Shows pretty good mechanics and sweet release.

CB Jarviel Hart and Marcus Bobb
The perimeter duo was spectacular. Made more plays than they gave up. Best part about these two player, they are sure tacklers. Seems to like contact and will come up and “hit ya.” Hart made a spectacular interception, which was the play of the game. Reeled in a one handed catch, which would have, been a touchdown pass if not intercepted. See below…

ATH Kaleel Gaines
Did so much on both sides of the ball. Showed his value as a receiver, defensive back and wildcat QB. Was a change of pace runner when running the wildcat, adding a different dimension to the offense.

DE Travis Lawton
Pleasant surprise, especially to find out he is just a junior. Big, long pass rusher and neutralizer when stopping the run. One to watch.

FORT MEADE

QB Jay Smith
Under appreciated player. Starts on both sides of the ball. Made some really good plays with his arm and feet. Showed lots of guts and determination. Under threw a balls and had a few interceptions. Both picks came as Smith was trying to make a play.

RB Tyler King
Sophomore sensation on the way here. Baller! Ran like an experienced veteran. Hit the hole hard, showed some elusiveness and power. Pretty frame, strong lower body and build. Quick burst from a standstill position and vision at the second level. Very good prospect.

WR Tobias Culpepper
The biggest playmaker on the team and arguably one of the best play makers in the area. Snagged one pass out the air, which looked like the QB would overthrow him. Stole one Xavier Gaines pass (interception) out the air where it looked like he had “Go Go Gadget” arms. Was Jay Smith’s most dependable receiver and would have had a few deep TD passes if not under thrown.
